A new film a " a dogs purpose" Premier January 27 shows a scene during the filming where a GSD used in a scene with water is forced into the water. I loved the book and was looking forward to the film. From what I can see in this clip posted on TMZ and other sites I am not impressed with the trainers methods( to say the least).
Would it be possible for someone to post a link?
Opinions anyone?

I haven't seen that film, so I cannot judge. Was the dog really forced? e.g pulled into the water? And how?
My two Pits are not really waterdogs. I did it bit by bit with mark/rew, I must admit, I gave them sometimes a very little tug to enter the pool into shallow water, just to get them used to the new element and in order to help them not to avoid everything which causes uncertainty. For my Lab-Mix it was never a problem at all. On the contrary, I have to watch that she doesn't enter the pool without my permission.
Forcing - never! Or would call the little tug "force" too? It took some time, but meanwhile it works. The Pits now also jump into. But only when I'm already in the water and call them. The little tug is not necessary any more.
Sorry a link I don't have, Though I'd love to have one too.

Haven't read the book, so don't have any opinion on the written version -- Saw a preview of the film last weekend at the theater & it looked kinda lame (talking dog narrated the movie in a very heavy-handed way, which did not appeal to me) ... AGREE that the "trainer" ranting on this expose' TMZ clip sounds really Obnoxious, but also DISAGREE with that Dog Wrangler's mishandling of the GSD
I will now follow my initial inclination & avoid seeing this film!

Thanks for the link, Becky. I'll certainly watch it but had not had the time yet.

I've watched that film now. It is shocking, disgusting, sickenening. This man must be a swine
Evidently he has never learned to teach an animal something it has problems with. How can someone be such a monster and throw a dog who is so full of fear into the water. And in this case even not in a calm water but in a pool which has obviously a system of contracorrente!!! He has obviously never heard the expression "bit by bit" or "gradually" and this adapted to what the dog can take at the moment.
This poor dog near to drowning must have now an awful traumatism, which he will not so easily be able to cope with. He will need someone to teach him just to step a little bit into the water many times until he is used to the element, before trying anything else.
I didn't trust my eyes. This man has no compassion at all and not the least scent how to work with a dog. He simply wanted to proof something. that's animal cruelty and IMO it's a horrible shame and he belongs behind bars.

Agreed, slow introduction would have been best, because the dog was so terrified no wonder it almost drowned, and her tactics of calling him seemed to stress him out more. Glad they were caught!

YES, that GSD would have DROWNED if the swimmers were not rescue-ready !!!
When a dog PANICS while swimming, its body assumes an ever more Vertical Position causing the Head to Submerge even in calm water

Sounds like the red carpet opening has been canceled for the time being and there will be a number of investigations on the issues.
The movie animal watch dog, pardon the pun, was put on "leave" for now. Whatever that means.

My brain damaged one has great problems with oriientatio. He is now quite well used to the elemet water, I can also let him swim n the deeper parti since he has realized that water carries him provided he is in the right position. Of course I'm always directly beside him.
Greatest problem at the moment: He doesn't find the way out, When I lead him exactly in straight line in front of the stairway, then he masters the situation. A year ago he wasn't able to do even this. (Balance problems). Now, when we are in the deeper water and away from the direct access to the stairs and I tell him to go out he swims against the walls, panics and like Candi described loses his horizontal position, his hind part sinks down and his head would be under water, if I didn't hold him.
At the moment I'm training almost only this with him. Finding his way out is the most important part for him. It could so easily happen that some day he falls into the pool, Though he is mostly on the other side of the house or in the kennel.
