Hi,
Some how my Lucifer got his first prey (rabbit).
He has a good recall normally and will come a drop stuff he is not suppose to have (brushes, horse leg protection)
Well once he got the bunny and decided to eat it he would not come and he would not let me near him either.
Other then back on a longer drag line, more recall work, maybe yummier treats. What can I do before the e-collar come out.
Lucifer is now 6 months old and a very good boy, I even got a recall off wild turkeys. I did not have time to react with the rabbit. I saw a thing move, I knew he would not come back. He never bolted very far, just out of reach.
IMHO, there is absolutely No reason to Wait any longer, since you are already allowing him to be offlead in situations where he will continue to encounter Irresistible Temptations -- A major point of Proper Training on an e-collar is to have a FAIL-SAFE RECALL no matter what ... With correct e-collar training, it is Highly Unlikely that he would ever need any ongoing Stim to speak of at all, Ariane.
I have worked in the past with an e-collar. It is mostly his age that bugged me.
tonight I have turkey under my back deck, when we went out for a potty break.
With the dog being on a lead I think it's a matter of waiting it out till he jumps a rabbit.
I haven't used a e-collar for training at all but, done correctly this seems to be the best bet.
Others here may offer other better advice but i think this is one of those behaviors that need a solid correction that they can connect to the chasing of any critter.
When I was training my first GSD for SAR work we would expose the dog to road kill and also live trapped animals in order to keep them from chasing anything on a search but again, these were dog that hadn't caught/killed anything previous to the training.
I would just go to ecollar. Long lines are a PITA. 6 months is just fine for an ecollar especially if you are using modern low level training. Negative reinforcement methods are my preferred approach especially for pups.

Glad to see that Bob & Cathy are both with me on this one
My natural-born-prey-killing AKITA ("Shock & Awe Shaka") could be called off ANY PREY by just One !COME! Command using absolutely No Stim whatsoever -- I had proofed Shaka on All BASIC Obedience commands first BEFORE training her on the E-Collar ... Only then did I introduce the Remote-Control system & it only took ONE lesson for her to UNDERSTAND: Mom has an "Invisible Leash" now, so I must ALWAYS COME no matter what else Attracts my Attention !!!
Shaka would TURN on a DIME and Race to Me off cats, Off Deer, OFF SQUIRRELS, off other dogs & anything else with NO STIM at all (And she was a Superior Hunter with MANY vermin KILLS under her belt Already.)
