8 year old great dane (rescue) has developed an old man cough and lost his appetite. This is day 3
and he has eaten almost nothing. He has had irritable bowel syndrome in the past and was on metronidazole for 10 days this time but has none of his usual symptoms at present. Vet listened to his breathing on Friday and thought it sounded okay. He is coughing up white frothy (viscous) sputum.
Any insight? What to do? I hate to drag him back to the vet as he is very stressed there.

If these symptoms are new and nothing at all like his IBS symptoms, I would get him right back to see the vet. When you say this is day 3, I don't know if you mean day 3 of the coughing, day 3 of not eating, or day 3 since you last saw the vet. Was he coughing like that when you saw the vet last Friday? What was the vet's advice? The symptoms you describe are alarming to me. I am not a veterinary professional, but I know from painful experience that coughing up white froth may be a sign of fluid in the lungs, either from a respiratory infection or heart failure.

In addition to what Cheri says, the coughing and inappetence can also be symptoms of infectious canine tracheobronchitis (kennel cough). But to my mind, I would not be ruling out even more serious problems without a vet (asap, IMHO).
I also am not a healthy professional, but I too think this guy needs a vet.
Please let us know .... also, I'm so sorry he's very stressed at the vet. I have had a dog like that, and it helped somewhat for me to be extremely calm and upbeat.
Perhaps later I could post for you some steps you might want to take to lessen his dread of the vet.

Thank you so much for your input. (The 3 days had referred to lack of appetite). He had had the
coughing when last at the vet for a recheck of the anal gland issue (does it ever end?!!) associated
with the IBS and I guess air entry was okay without abnormal breath sounds. BUT since posting
the above, things have been clarified somewhat by the development of the same symptoms in
a small foster dog that we currently have. My dog's kennel cough vaccination had lapsed but he
is never in contact with other dogs (apart from the foster who was supposed to have been vaccinated). The closest he has come was his initial trip to the vet 2 weeks ago but I expect he
could have picked it up there. Lesson learned. I don't think there is anything I can do at this point apart from letting it run its course?
(He, my dane, had the stomach tacking surgery some years ago--I think he has a long memory).
I find the advice on this site invaluable and will take it all with gratitude.

Also, there are MANY different strains of Kennel Cough -- Consequently, dogs can easily contract a strain that their Bordetella vax did NOT prevent ... "Best laid plans"

He had the cough when last at the vet for anal glands? How long ago was that, or was this last Friday's visit?
I ask because kennel cough doesn't last for a long time.
Here's the WDJ info on Kennel Cough in Dogs: Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention. (See two posts down)
Again, I'm not a health professional.

Connie, your link on kennel cough didn't come through above.
Something else to consider is canine influenza, which is pretty widespread in the US, though I have no idea how prevalent it is in Canada.

I know those of us participating in this thread know, but for the benefit of others who may be reading this, canine influenza and kennel cough are two different things.

Ditto with Connie on the Kennel cough.
USUALLY not serious with a grown dog but 8 yrs is pretty old for a Dane.
As mentioned by Candi there are many "varieties" and being inoculated for one doesn't mean a great deal if a dog travels a lot.
It can be serious in a young puppy.

Great Infos, thank you all! My dogs thanks God haven't had great health issues until now, but one can never know and then it will be very helpful to have this thread printed and can read thes Infos again.
One question: Two of mine tend to salivate a lot sometimes. Not frequently, but when then with long hanging threads. Is this a sign of an illness or something wrong with the teeth? Though we let all this examine each year. Or can it be that something is lacking in their food? We give raw food, = muscle meet, organic meet, eggs, yogurt, white cheese, chia seeds, and quinoa in small quantities. certain fruits and veggies. (no onions, no garlic, no avocados). But of course not all of it daily.
