OK, watched the thing on Netflix this wknd...
As films go, it was one of the WORST movies I've ever seen -- Nonetheless, all the stories about each Individual Dog's life & death reduced me to a soggy mess, just as I knew would happen ... But hello, you had to be put through THAT how MANY times in just One lousy Sitting ??? What a cruel concept (The now infamous "water stunt" scene lasted all of one nano-second.)

EXACTO-MUNDO
Excerpts from the Film...
Scene in a PUPPY MILL early-on:
Prospective Buyer, "What breed is that?"
Puppy Pusher, "This here's a Red Retriever." (It's the 1st K9 star of the movie.)
Scene with a FEMALE PSD (a reincarnation of the Male K9 Star of the film):
ONE cop with a K9 officer is deployed to Apprehend an ARMED Kidnapper with a HOSTAGE -- The poor cop bungles his end of this job SO ineptly, that the K9 officer (after saving the hostage) is Shot to Death by the bad guy
I could go on and On and ON, but I'll spare you the Frustration !!!

Dang! At least in Old Yellar only one dog dies.
Maybe if one believes in reincarnation it could be a happier movie.

Not really, IMHO Poor dog just kept on coming back to one more Wretched Life after another, for the most part -- I wouldn't even wish THAT on my ex-husband, LOL ... I was prepared to give this film a fair shake & try to LIKE it, but by the end, I was just kicking myself for renting that thing !!!

I prefer to believe that all the dogs, horses, cats, hamsters, rabbits, cows, and gold fish that I have ever loved will be waiting for me at the bridge safe and sound and happy hanging out with St. Francis.
Maybe that's just me...

YES, yours a Superior belief system, IMHO No animal should be put through HELL in "the next life" -- Every innocent creature has already earned its Just Reward in eternity after 1 go-round here ... Any human who wants to think that They Themselves should be subjected to some "karmic Punishment cycle" is entitled to their own opinion (of course) but I refuse to accept such a notion when it comes to Pets OR Wildlife Maybe that's just me too, Kel, so I'm definitely WITH you on this one !!!

OMG, that incredibly uplifting scene at the very end of "Where the Red Fern Grows" when the dogs' spirits have gone hunting together once again... I'm bawling my eyes out right here at my desk in the office, just from seeing it in my mind's eye (sob) !!!

I was lucky to have grown up in the town next to where the author of WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS lived and he came and talked to our class several times. He signed our books and we also got to be the first to see the original movie when it first came out.
He said there were only 2 parts in the book that were not absolutely true - if you PM me I will tell you what parts - I don't want to publicly give away his secrets
He also said that he got about half way done with the first manuscript and he got mad at himself because his grammar was not very good and he ended up burning it. His wife said the story needed to be told and helped him with his grammar and was integral in the book getting published.
Just a couple fun facts
