My vet told me NOT to feed any extra calcium to my female 12 week old GSD. However, I have a freind who has been breeding/training GSD for years and he recomends feeding her a calcium phospate supplement to help her ear development and her pasturns (wrist equivalent). The calim is that calium from calcium phospate does not cause rapid growth development like calcium carbonate. It makes no sence to me. If the mineral is there, the body will use it as needed, right? Her ears are defenity going up without addition of aids right now but her pasturns are "lumpy".
What is the forums view on calcium supplementation with calcium phospate??
Hi, Just don't over do it. It can strip away nutrients and cause the cartalige to actually get weeker if overused. Sometimes kidney stones in older dogs.
If you feed a good natural diet here's a little info.
Eggshells and Bone matter is about 30%-40% calcium. Salmon is a great choice too for calcium and omega fatty acids.
I just feed raw and add one human Multivitamin and one human Glucosamine/chondroitin
FWIW - I'm not a nutritionist...
If death comes like a thief in the night, my dog and I wont be surprised.
I use Nutro mixed with Mackeral. I get the Mackeral on sale at the commisary for 50cents 12oz can. bought a couple of cases of it. tried to feed it to the family, they wouldn't touch it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
