You probably need to increase the Omega 3 fatty acids in your dog's diet. I feed 6 raw egg yolks from free range hens (my own hens) per dog/week. I have found that if I feed too many whites they do have a tendency to get a bit itchy. Real free ranging chicken eggs will have dark yellow/orange yolks. I also add 9000 mgs of Salmon body oils per dog/week.
Thanks! I'm assuming this is with a BARF diet, rather than commercial? I've also read and heard about flaxseed oil as a good supplement. Any thoughts on that?
Oils of any kind may help. Another possibility is an allergy to the food base, most commonly wheat or corn. Changing from one to the other may help cure this problem. In addition there is a food called Avoderm with a significant amount of avacodo in the food that I have seen help with dry skin problems.

There's no wheat or corn in their food. I don't think it's allergy based though, because they're not scratching. It just always gets bad this time of year when the weather cools off and the air is much drier...no different from our own skin. (I use Lubriderm myself, but I don't think the dogs would appreciate being lubed up with that! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> ) I feed commercial food, so I'm leaning more towards adding an oil supplement than the eggs for fear that would add too much protein to their diet.
Yes, I do feed BARF, but I also added the eggs (about the same amount) and oils to their diets when I fed kibble. I had the same problems as you, dry skin in the winter.
I don't use Flaxseed oil for two reasons. It is expensive AND I have read about too many GSD that are allergic to it.
i've been reading that you guys feed your gsd's salmon oil to help with dry skin, i feed my female dog a commercial dog food which i will not mention due to the embarassment i will feel, but rest assure i am changing to an all natural diet very very soon , as soon i get the how to's on it. but i think she has dry skin because she itches and bites on a regular basis. how much salmon oil do you feed them and how is it fed? on top of food, in the water? sorry im a newbie and need lots of info.
I feed 9000 mg per week of the salmon oil. I have only found it in 1000 mg gelcaps which I just mix in with their veggie mix 3 times per week (3000 mgs per meal). One dog I put the gelcaps in her dish with enough hot water to cover them just to dissolve the gelcap a bit. I use to cut open the gelcaps, but they eat them just fine whole.
I have read that some people have been able to find the salmon oil in cans and then you would just pour it on the food.
