I've been invisible for a week or so because I just moved.
After 42 years in one place (!) I moved a few blocks away. OMG, was it horrible ... 42 years worth of stuff. THOUSANDS of dollars (more than $6K ... I don't have all the bills yet), ROYAL pain in the butt, and just got my phone and email back today! (Oh, plus paying for two places for six weeks!)
Thank goodness for my two adult daughters. One came last month to help me find the new place, and one came Saturday to be the main pack animal/arranger/organizer/shopper. I'm exhausted, but she did 20 times as much as I did.
Regardless of the wonderful packer/movers and the trucking folks who hauled away my rejects, moving SUCKS and is a MOUNTAIN of tedious physical labor!
But it's done!

!!Family!!
When we moved 11+ yrs ago we weren't going to look for a new place until the old house was close to being sold.
BUT, we looked at a house "just to be looking" and fell in love with it......and put an offer on it.
They took the offer.
Because the old house was in a neighborhood with a lousy school district and a bit of a high crime area the old house sat for two yrs and only had two people look at it.
We carried both houses for two years.
Yes, without my family things would have been a royal pia!

Connie, I'm glad to hear that big job is over, and now, hopefully, you love the new place and can relax. As somebody who has wanted to move for a long time, one of the things that stresses me out, though, just thinking about it, is all the HARD WORK! And, of course, just the logistics of organizing, sorting through things, deciding what to keep, packing, and all the minute details that go along with the whole process.
The other thing that worries me is what you went through, Bob, buying a new place and then having trouble selling the old place.
Having family and friends willing to give of their time and energy to help out is priceless!

Three things I seriously HATE in life: job-hunting, Moving, DIVORCE...
And the thing I hate MOST is when they must all take place at ONCE

The preparations for our imigration to Brazil seemed to be endless. First to get all kinds of documents in order to recieve the permanent visas. Then sell our house, which was very difficult at that time. We couldn't sell it and after one year the visas had expired and we had to repeat each single step again. Fortunately within the second year we finally sold the house. Now came all that awfull work with tidying out, packing and shipping. We also had a huge back and forth to find a flight which accepted to transport our three cats.
Family? No. The nearer ones were already dead. Nieces and nephews lived in completely remote areas in Switzerland. Luckily we had good neighbours who helped us as far as they could. Once in Brazil we had to rent a house for some weeks until the previous owners could move out. Additionally the horror to wait until the containers arrived.
Well, we all inclusive cats) survived it. Though I'd never do it again.
