i am wondering if anyone here has ever tried or even considered useing a glusosamine sulfate product for horses to use on a dog with HD? i am asking because the stuff for horses you can get alot more for your money? any feedback? opionions?
Ed sells and swears by Grand Flex http://leerburg.com/grandflex.htm I used cosequin for a while with my older dog that just passed away. The cosequin is a bit more expensive, and I do not believe it is any better. I only used it because I already had clients with horses that were on it in my barn so it was easier to just order all the same.
Either way, you get a much better deal for your dollar than you do on the dog versions.
so about how long would that 1.875 grandflex last me with my one dog with HD?. going with your feeding dosage. according to my poor math skills looks like it would only last 8 days? am i wrong?
1.876 lbs is 30 ounces. Each oz. has 5000 mg. and the recommended dosage (typical) is 1500 mg., so there are three doses per ounce. That means it should last 90 days. But it is a glucosamine only product, no chondroitin, and recent JAVMA research says the best results may be achieved by combining the two, rather than one or the other.
I use the Grand Flex on my working dogs, especially when they get older. There is no question in my mind that this product added two years to my late Mink son (Otis - who was put down 3 weeks ago)
If a dog is in pain, put him on 1 OZ a day for 30 days, then cut it back to 1/2 to 1/4 OZ - I guess it comes down to what you are willing to do for your dog.
Well i knew my math was wrong. i knew it was going to last longer than that. plus ed says 2 tsp per day for 4 weeks than cut to 1 tsp per day, so really it should last even longer than 90 days. i am going to order it anyway, i really hope to see a diffence in my HD dog of 7 years.

We did have dog on Rimydal the other month, but removed that and just have him on the Grand Flex right now.
This is a dog that was diagnosed with Lyme's disease this past April and the past two months have been Rimydal free (was on it during Sept/Oct) and he is worked 5-6 days a week in 1-2 phases. This was a dog that was in pain this past winter/spring/summer, was not worked at all this late spring/summer and you could see it in the tail set as well. As soon as he was back in late May, we had him on the Grand Flex. To me, it has helped a lot.

No, I can't give you a link cuz you have to have a member number to access the journal articles on line. I'll see if I can find the article and cut/paste the relevant paragraph(s).
