Has anybody ever heard of supplementing with Vit B to help ward off fly's,fleas, mosquito's etc.,,,?One source said that this is not a good idea as it will throw off other Vitamin absorbtions if not given correctly.Others of said it can't hurt and has many benefits, including and offensive scent to pests,to give extra via supplement.I am always a little nervous with the type and what I am supplementing with as I feel it can be overdone. What do you guy's think?
Supplementing your dog's food is a good idea IMO. You will find many on this board are proponents of the raw diet, myself included. If you feed your dog a dry food, than supplements will greatly benefit him.
Just make sure your B vitamins are water soluble and the dosage is proportionate to weight.
I prefer to use kelp powder which offers not just vitamins, but minerals too. If your dog does not have an allergic reaction to it, another good source for vits and minerals is alfalfa powder.
What's a horrible idea is megadosing on any vitamin supplement. Just because it's water soluble doesn't mean it can't do harm when taken to excess. I think in moderation/appropriate doses, it probably does have its benefits. But, do you know if your dog is already getting what they need from their diet? If so, I wouldn't add any more. But that's just me. Your dog, your decision.
I just heard that today that Vitamin B1 helps to ward off mosquitos in humans. I was just thinking that it might possibly be true for dogs too. My friend and I are going to try it on ourselves first this summer.

I dont think the idea is that crazy; I was having a similar discussion at work concerning boy scouts, camping, and vitamin B -- I have commented before that my BARF dog (who does take B complex) has not had any problem with fleas....so maybe there is a connection. I dont know.
I certainly don't give megamega doses - one human super B complex a day.
Vit b12 has been known to help with energy, b6 helps better absorption in the GI tract for other supplements, and also acts as an enhancer. Garlic is real good for fleas and ticks (I assume mosquitos too). I give my dogs 1 Tbs heaping of minced garlic with their meal. They scratch b/c it feels good! I have yet to see a flea on them, and we live in the middle of the forest!
