Hey everyone. Some of you may remember reading or responding to a post about yeast infections where I responded with a problem I was having with Kane. He has a yeast infection on his body. I took him to the vet and he gave me some special shampoo and some thyroid meds for him. In the mean time I have completely switched him to a raw diet which Im very happy with.
I have ran out of the special conditioner and Im almost out of the shampoo. His yeast has gotten a little better but hasnt gone away. Also we had some issues with our bathroom and he had to go less frequently without a medicated bath. So it now looks like it did in the begining.
Anyways, I was wondering if theres any type of supplements I can gve him that will help. I have read that its mainly becuase his immune system is weakened and that basically you have to build that up while at the same time taking care of the outside with meds.
Right now he takes Vitamin E caps and Omega-3. Does anyone have any experience with a dog getting better with supplements? I have not taken him back to the vet "yet" because its not cheap and weve had some tragedy lately. (Son put car through garage.) So Id like to do the most I can myself before taking him back. Any advice?
I have heard so much about once feeding a raw diet skin problems should go away. I have not noticed any difference in his skin or coat since switching to raw. Doesnt anyone have any advice on supplements or something I can do at home?
Wow thanks I will deffinately try it. My poor baby. He smells SO bad and his underside looks terrible. Also any ideas for his ears? I have heard to stay away from peroxide and others say to use it. His build up in his ears is awful and I have tried the peroxide <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> and he was in pain when I was cleaning his ears. He was whinning and even let out a little growl. Should I try to muzzle him or just leave that to a vet? It obviously bothers him when Im wipping the ears. Should I just blot any solution I use out until it loosens up more? They even bled a little and oozed the last time I tried cleaning them.
I would definitely take hime to the vet. There are drops that will dry the ear canal. Since yeast thrives in moist areas, drying the ear takes care of the yeast infection in the ear.
Yeast infections are tough to get rid of. Getting a culture and identifying the exact culprit will allow the vet to tailor the meds and helps get rid of it a lot faster than trying a "shotgun" approach (ie, hoping something you put in the ear will kill the yeast...)
I know there are dog trainers who like to use home remedies for ear yeast infections....and perhaps some of them work. But one that does NOT, is applying yeast meds sold over the counter for a woman's "problem" . It's just not going to do it. The stuff in the dogs ear is a completely different type of yeast from that found in a human womans body!
