My wife is complaining pretty heavily about grass staining from the dog's urine. She is pushing to get some nutritional supplement that alters the pH of the dog's urine. I've done a google on the ingredients and they seem benign: dl-Methionine (amino acid); Pyridoxine HCL (B-vitamin); Montmorillinite (main component of Bentonite, which is derived from volcanic ash); and Thiamine. Is this stuff safe for the dog? If so, does it work?
I wouldn't give supplments for my grass; even if the ingredients seem benign, would you really want to alter the ph of your dog's urine? Upset the delicate balance of the kidneys?
If it works, it is probably bad for your dog, if it doesn't, it is a pricey vitamin.
Just water down the place where your dog goes each time, or train to go on gravel.
Dogs and a nice green lawn are usually mutually exclusive. I decided which one I wanted long ago, and live with it. When it comes time to sell the house, I'll resod.

Well, thanks for the response. Clearly I'm skeptical. But, rather than just opinion, I was wondering if any one had any solid evidence pro or con for this type of supplementation.
Thanks very much, that was a very helpful link. I looked for info on the web, but couldn't find any. Guess my search skills aren't as good as I thought they were.
I took a different route and changed the grass type by tilling and seeding with RTF grass. Initially it looks ok, seems somewhat better at resisting the damage. Also, I water every evening, religiously. Usually while I take the dogs to the lake, I tried running the sprinkler with them out back once, and they loved it. Wasn't good for the lawn though, as they started tearing chunks of wet soil out of the ground when they were turning. I think in golf they call those divits or something. They both love water, and even seeing the sprinkler gets them spun up pretty good. The watering probably has more to do with a lack of burning than grass type though.
If everyone is thinking alike, then someone isn't thinking.
