We currently train our dogs in Schutzhund but I cant help but be intrigued by Ring sports (no tracking, light ob lol). Has anyone had the expereince of training a dog in both and what are the pro/cons of this.
I know my trainer would kill me if I messed up their schutzhund training but can this be done without compromising the performance in either or both?
thanks look forward to hearing some opinions,
Tracey
I have seen plenty of dogs that had both Ring and Schutzhund titles, but they didn't compete in both. One then the other. Same deal with Protection training. But, I don't know very much about Ringsport. Hell, I don't know anything about Ring. . . I only know how tough it is to be good at any one area of training. (good like pass a trial good <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> , let alone get a top score)
Why the hell don't people like to track? Tracking is, by far, my favorite part of Schutzhund.
Hi Tracy, yes it can be done but If you are already into a Sch program with the dog then you may have narrowed down the target area of the bite to the sleeve and that will cost you in Ringsport.
Ring dogs can bite anywhere from the ankles to the shoulders and anywhere in between.
Stay with the program that you are in for the moment and master that and do not try to cross train at this point as it will really hurt your Sch Training.
Most Sch III that are converted are better allowed to only bite upper body high arm and shoulder and arm pit as the Sch training leads a dog to this target area.
Good luck and if you need any training advice on the conversion if you do decide to do it then I have done it on a couple of Sch III dogs into Ring.
Thanks Jerry,
the dog I am currently working is just a year old. Yes he is moving fast but I dont know if I would say he is locked into anything just yet.
Ring sounds like a bunch of fun, but I am enjoying Schutzhund for the moment.
I guess Ill try and check out a few clubs the only thing I dont like is there arent very many so decoy/trainer choices are not as abundant as in Schutzhund.
Maybe the next dog after I do some more research and see some events in person and see some trainers and decoys work.
Thanks again for the response it was kinda what I figured, but I thought I would at least ask.
