Hello all, as a few of you know I have 6 Akitas, all very good dogs. They all have jobs- weight pull, obedience, and helping me in the house. Now here is the question, I have a 3 year old male that couldn't do weight pull because he didn't have the desire to pull, and was bored in normal obedience (but I must say he is good at it) and I just got him not to long ago, he never had training in his life so I have been teaching him the basics and never got around to teaching him to do house work. I want to do something with this dog. I then begain to notice something, he always had his nose to the ground, and tracked things down, one time he found me a $50 bill on the ground! Then one time a womens' cat went missing, and my dog and I went outside for a walk and he quicky put his nose to the ground and started pulling in another direction, knowing that he was a good tracking and might be on to something, I followed, and he begain searching around the area with his nose to the ground, then he ran into a bush, I looked in to see what he was doing, and saw that he found the womens' missing cat! Now, where do I go to get started in tracking? It is something I would really like to give a try, so please reply, thanks for reading, bye all.

Andre, I don't know about Kathy's Akita.
My girl got a big TOMCAT early this morning. The Tomcat tried but my Akita has had plenty of exrerience with stray cats coming into my fenced in yard. However this is the first time she has ever bayed one, usally just goes in and crunches them.
No, I do not encourage her killing anything, that's why she is kept on leash outside of our yard. On leash she's a big baby.
I'm glad she's not out of Working Line Akita's. Then again maybe I wish she were. She does have a full/hard bite. and 80% of the time she OUTS.

Kathy, did you want to teach him to be a SAR dog, get your tracking title, or just for fun? Ed has a great video on teaching tracking, it depends on what kind of tracking you want to do. I'm not sure, but I think SAR tracking dogs are encouraged to both ground and air scent(please correct me if I'm wrong here) and Schutzhund dogs are only ground scenting. Either way, you still start the dog the same. One of the problems I've found is finding a place large enough to lay a good track, that has the terrain I need. It sounds like this dog would really enjoy this discipline.

When my Akita found the cat he just looked at me and stood by it and tried not to let it get away (he didn't bite at it to keep it there, he kind of herded it). I want to do sport tracking with him. Also, my Akitas help in the house by: bringing in the groceries, bringing me the phone when it rings and bringing me other stuff (keys, leashes, etc.), throwing things away for me and taking the trash out, loading the dish washer, storting the laundry, turning on and off the lights, holding doors for me, getting different food items from the icebox and counter for me (they know how to get a can of coke, bear, water, chips, etc.), organizing books, movies, etc. (not in any order, just putting them back in place), and they can help me with the other animals. I trained them all to do differnt things, so one of them can get me soda, and one can turn the lights off, etc. They all know a good bit of commands each. I ordered videos 203 and 204 for tracking. Thank you all, bye.
