I am getting my Shepherd ready for the Sch.1. The problem I am having is when he downs at the article he lays on it with his chest. I backed up and went back to close work and downing him with the article at his nose. He does fine as long as I am close, but if I give full line he lays on it. HELP!!!
Karen
I started him by walking beside him and when we got to the article I told him down and gave him a treat. He is very food oriented. I don't have a problem with him unless I get more than 10 feet from him. I have marked them and told him down and he does fine; its just when I don't say anything. We have been working on it every or at least every other morning for 2 months. I have only tried not saying anything 5 or 6 times. I just want to make sure I don't cause a problem that's harder to fix than to do it right the first time. He's a great dog and learns the easiest of any dog I have had. He won't be a monster but he will do very well.
Do as above but dont give the virbal command. This is only if you are certain that he knows he is suposed t5o do. Dont be hard, juas a lite correction with the lead.

Karen,
It sounds like there are two issues going on. Is he only downing when you give him a command, or is he downing most of the time, but incorrectly, i.e., on top of the article?
Renee, He downs everytime now, I didn't try it away from him till I was sure he understood. I tried it from behind him, then a few feet farther, but when I get about 10 feet or so he just lays on top of it. I guess I need to go back to beside him and stay there for a bit longer and not try moving away till it becomes habit to drop with it just in front of him. Maybe I did try it to soon. Its almost like he's trying to possess it. He tries really hard to understand what I want.
OK, I think I got it. Go back to being close to him. When he downs correctly, with the article between his front legs, praise and give him a treat off the article. I don’t mean put the food on the article, but keep it in the palm of your hand and put the back of your hand on the article. This will teach him to leave the article open for the placement of the treat. Also, at this point you should not be using the word “down”, unless he is confused and doesn’t know what to do.
