Hey all,
I'm currently attending the MWD Handlers course down here at wonderful Lackland AFB. I'm an AF SP.
So far the course has been wonderful, and I'm learning alot about the various aspects of handleing a dog.
Due to my class size (there's only 7 of us, we're the smallest class here), we've been doing alot more actual Training than previous classes. We've got 4 Green dogs, 2 pull dogs, and 1 in-between. We also have several dogs that are "Class Dogs" - dogs that other teams had problems with and gave to us to fix. All in all, it gives us a bit of a different learning experience when it comes to actually fixing the problems that various dogs have.
As far as what someone said about muzzled aggression, we don't do that down here, but we do that training at my base (Scott AFB, IL). Here at Lackland they're supposed to teach us the basics - at your permanant base is where the advanced training is.
Any questions/comments, feel free to post and I'll answer to the best of my ability.
Phil

Hi Phil,
I have some questions, not knowing anything about Military dogs.... here they are.
1: What is MWD? Military Working Dog?
2: What's a Pull Dog?
3: What do you train your dogs to do?
Sorry to be asking such silly questions <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Lonny,
1. MWD - Military Working Dog.
2. A Pull Dog is a dog that's already been certified in either Patrol or Detection (or both). It's a dog with experience, who knows its job, and is used as a training aid for students.
3. We train our dogs alot of things LOL it depends on what you're asking. For Patrol, a dog is trained in basic & advanced obedience, attack work (on and off leash, with or without command), searches (building), and Scouting (fields, trails, etc.). For attack work, the dogs are trained now in Out & Guard fashion. My dog, however, is an older dog and is trained in the Out & Heel. For Detection work, the dogs (if capable) are trained to detect either narcotics or explosives.
Hope this helps. Feel free to clarify anything, or ask more questions.
Phil

Hey Phil see if MWD Taint is still there. I was one of the first handlers to be with him. I certified him in detection but didnt in patrol. We had a bigger class when I went through. Also are they doing any suit work down there or are they still just using sleeves.

Austin,
Do you remember Taints tatt. # or kennel? That would help narrow my search. I'll ask my instructors tomorrow if they've heard of him.
Yes, we do suit work. We've done it two or three times now, to see if the dogs will go for other parts of the body instead of just the sleeve-arm.
You're right about some of the pull dogs being retired. I forgot about that momentarily!
I'm from Scott Air Force Base, in IL (about 20 min from St. Louis, Missouri).

Thanks Phil,
That answers my questions.... I was just wondering what kind of stuff you did with the dogs, nothing specific. Sounds like a lot of fun, better then mess duty!

Hey Austin,
I asked about Taint. It brought alot of chuckles from the instructors.
Seems Taint is at the AF Academy, but may be soon put on "Death Row" since his inability to work with other handlers (other than the one he's got now, who will be leaving soon).
Sucks.

Taint tried to bite me once. After that never agian, he had a little talk with Jesus. Thats to bad hes a good dog just need some good training with the same person. Some dogs just dont adjust well to changing of handlers. I am surprised Stewart Hillard hasnt taken a look at the dog? Ask the instructors why hasnt he looked at the dog.

What kind of dogs are you using there ?
Is it all Belgium shepherd MH or are there still German shepherds and others ?
It is mine personal experience that Belgium shepherds have more problems adjusting new handlers than german shepherds.
Greetings to all dogsporters
