wondering how quick after a bath your dog start to stink. mine takes about a week or so then he smells like dog stink. sometimes he pees a bit on the bottom of his leg as he begins to move before he is done. i am sure this doesnt help.
Do you brush him on a regular basis? Alot of smoth coated dogs owners are short on this because if the dogs don't get mats, "It's not that important". NOT! The pee on the leg is another thing.
My dogs are brushed regularly, and almost never bathed unless they roll in something. I think they smell nice, like dogs. A dog that whizzes on his leg may need a leg wash, but if it really smells, there might be something wrong - is it the ears (maybe infection?) or butt (maybe gland problems?) or breath (crappy diet?) Or does he live outside or roll in stuff? Dogs should not smell unless there is something wrong or someone is not a dog lover, just my two cents.
Auster smells like artificial peachy stuff for about 1/2 a week  . She starts to smell good again after a little more than a week, unless deer poop is involved. I guess I'm strange because I enjoy the smell of a dog in it's slightly more natural state (but not too natural, see deer comment above).
You can use a wet sponge to clean the legs off several times a week. There are also canine grooming sprays and scents, including Timmy Holedigger and several other imitations.

How frequently do you bathe him? Bathing too frequently can cause dry skin/dandruff. Daily brushing is all a Dobe needs, unless he gets into something smelly or nasty. A dog should not be "stinky" if they have healthy skin and coat.
I never bathe my Labrador (I would if he rolled in something stinky, though), and he does not stink. He has a pleasant nutty odor behind his ears, and his feet smell like corn chips . The only thing that gets stinky is his bed, if I don't vacuum it frequently enough (and his ears, as he has allergies, but I clean them regularly with a prescription ear wash).
I use a Zoom Groom (rubber brush made by Kong) and a water/Listerine solution that I keep in a spray bottle. The occasional spritz with the Listerine cleans and disinfects the coat. I just checked a dobe grooming site, and noticed that they recommend the Listerine solution as follows: 1/3 water (for dilution), 1/3 Listerine (to clean/disinfect), 1/3 Alpha Keri Lotion (to add keratin to the coat).
If you do bathe him, be sure to use a mild soap, rinse thoroughly so that there is no soap residue left on his skin, and towel dry him.
My terriers are only brushed because dirt brushes out of their rough coats easily. They are bathed only after hunting because we some times get fleas even in the winter because fleas can be in the dens. My female, on the other hand, gets regular baths because when she goes, the males have to mark and they don't always wait till she finishes. A guy thing I guess
That is too funny. I read the corn chip thing on a email group and lo an behold, gunthers toes smell like fritos... I am glad to see I am not the only one.
So that's what that smell is! I thought my nose was playing tricks on me. Shadow must be dipping into the corn chips while I'm at work
