Maybe PETA has a chance to be useful with this horror I have posted below. My cousin
sent me this link and it makes me sick to my stomach. If I EVER saw ANYONE in ANY country
doing this I would go postal I could kick some ass on this issue...
I just learned via one of the other lists I'm on about this horror.
Apparently, the Soccer World Cup is to be held in Korea this year and
there is a plan to serve real dog meat in the form of hot dogs which
are to be handed out free. The following link provides more detailed
information about this horror as well as what you can do about it.
Participating sponsors include Coca Cola, MasterCard, Budweiser,
Hyundai, Fuji Film. The link provided below lists email adrresses
The Korean President Kim Dae Jung, FIFA, sponsors, has a sample
letter and phone numbers for ABC, NBC Dateline, & CBS 60 Minutes.
Please be forwarned that the description of the method of slaughter
is very unpleasant to say the least.

I remember seeing a documentary once on the Asian practice of eating dogs and cats. Not much can turn my stomach, but this was very difficult to watch. At least they just slit the dogs throats, but the poor cats they dunked in boiling oil or water before they were skinned alive.
Dogs and cats are sold live in some Asian markets. Right beside chickens, ducks, monkeys and other forms of "live fresh" meat. It is very difficult for North Americans to accept some of the eating practices of other countries, but in some cultures dogs are little more than vermin or a Sunday dinner. Imposing our own morals on others is often considered rude, but in areas where aphrodisiacs are often made from endangered species like rhinos and tigers the dog is a throwaway item. Just trying to enforce things like the CITES laws (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) is often a losing battle.
Hard to digest.

I did not read the article but I am sure it follows the same pattern of most of the other articles I have read on this subject. I hate to hear of the treatment many of these animals get before being eaten but I have come to the conclusion that as along as they are not trying to eat MY dog I would leave it be. I have eaten a lot of Cows - I am sure the people of India dont like it, but I am damn sure they wont be stopping me from eating it. Will I ever eat a dog or cat, probably not, I will also never eat horse meat, but the people of France sure seem to like it.
Should the animals be tortured before being killed and eaten, I dont think so and I would most likely beat the crap out of someone if I saw it happening, but unless I am prepared to give up cow, pig and poultry from my diet I cant tell someone else what kind of meat they should be able to eat.

Personally it has nothing to do with culture. That is a cop out. It has to do with animal cruelty and it being ILLEGAL to do this in that country. It also has to with our American sponsors turning their heads on this situation. It's bullshit and it makes me sick that just because it's not "my dog" that people would turn their heads...

Only problem with PETA is that they wouldn't lobby the appropriate people to get this stopped, they would just pipe bomb the stadium.
Peta is not a solution for ANYTHING. If something outrages you, take some initative and do something about it. Don't underestimate the ripple effect. People often don't know how to react to such issues, but if you give them names to write to and petitions to sign you would be amazed what happens.

World Cup Soccer is BIG$$$. We all know that major corporations fight to advertise at events like this. Many if not most do not really care about ethical problems in different cultures. They are just different cultural practices. What they couldn't get away with here, it's open season in other countries. There is always a way for them to work around it. With Asia opening up to North American business you will probably see more of this. $$$ is always the deciding factor.
Perhaps if a major news show like 60 Minutes or 20/20 would run a story, Americans would be better informed about the problem and could therefore petition these companies to make a stronger stand.

They are trying to get 20/20 and Dateline to do a story and the article gives email addresses and an example letter to send to sponsors and people invovled in the World Soccer thing. They are trying to lobby by email or petition. I for one will send an email and give my support AGAINST this sick and twisted situation.

Sorry I didn't click on the link sooner. I didn't want to see anything horrific before I had my coffee.
Ok, I agree with supporting this, but why drag in PETA? They are TERRORISTS, nothing more, nothing less. I will not support a group of people that think is it "unethical" to ride a horse or train a dog, sorry.
I live very close to a large research facility, The Jackson Laboratory. Peta will target a facility and to "whatever it takes" to stop this. While I don't always agree with the treatment of other species, I do not feel the need to kill people for doing their job.

Almost, the World Cup Finals are in Japan. The semi finals are in Korea and Japan. MLSnet.com has stories on the games. And, most sports fans in the US don't pay that much attention to adult soccer. Very few games are televised.
US team World Cup games are against Portugal June 5. Korea June 10 and Poland June 14. Finals are June 30.
2002 World Cup Schedule
I have no idea how to make this one dog related but- Go 'Quakes!
