Deputy John Trevor-Smith of the McKinley County Sheriff's Office and K-9 Rudy were performing an off lead track for a suspect who had beaten a family member with a shovel. Apparedntly he was also armed with a knife. After about a mile the track lead down the side of a mesa in rugged western NM. the dog went down and incountered the suspect who was laying in wait for the team. The rugged terrain slowed John down and when he arrived Rudy had been slain and the perpetrator fled again. Necropsy results are pending and it is unclear if the cause of death was a strangulation or stabbing.
Here in my city the news reported yesterday that one of our police K9s was attacked by 2 pit bulls when he tracked a suspect to a backyard where the 2 dogs were. The dogs surprised him and his handler. The K9 was lucky and got off fairly lightly.
My condolences to John Trevor-Smith and his family. I had the pleasure of meeting both John and Rudy and watching them work last spring. What a great team.
I hope they catch the perpetrator and he gets what he deserves!! I won't say what I think he deserves as there may be kids reading this board. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
My serious condolences. There's such a bond that forms with a dog, especially one you work with and train. I can't imagine the pain one feels from that.
As Cindy mentions, I agree whole heartedly. It's reasons like that why I don't think I could be a police officer.
Rudy lost his life in the LINE of DUTY, as has many before him. Let's all take a moment and reflect on the great deeds of all the K-9's that have passed on before Rudy and sadly the one's that will follow.
My deepest sympathy to Deputy John Trevor-Smith and his family. Rudy is in good company with the many K-9's that Protect their special resting place.
My sympathies to John, his family and the department. Losing a priceless partner is devastating. I heard of Rudy through Cindy E. What an incredible dog. I hope one day this loser encounters Rudy's Revenge ---and his name is C.J.
