EVERETT, Wash. – The Everett Police Department was mourning one of their own Tuesday after a K-9 police dog was struck by a car and killed while in hot pursuit.
In a 5-year law-enforcement career, Ikon racked up more than 80 arrests.
He was a faithful partner for his handler, a veteran police officer.

Ikon will be missed.
“He was doing his job when he was killed. That's all he knew and he loved doing it. He died doing it,” said Chip Higinbotham, Everett Police.
Ikon was called to an intersection to track a drug suspect who ran off after a traffic stop. The 33-year-old suspect bolted across I-5 in south Everett and Ikon was after him, unaware of the danger.
Ikon made it across all the northbound lanes until he reached the last one.
“His harness had been ripped off and another officer and I found him about 30 feet down the roadway on the shoulder,” said Higinbotham.
Ikon had made news when he sniffed out a bank robbery suspect holed up in a sprawling Boeing building. He lived at his handler’s home, was family to the officer’s wife and daughter, and was a close as any of the officer’s human partners.
“For five years, he's been in the back. I looked in the back today and I realized he's never gonna be there again,” said Higinbotham.
