I have a two year old Jack Russell terrier rescued from the local pound when she was only 5 weeks old. Over the summer some neighborhood children terrorized the dog by throwing rocks and chasing her with sticks. I had to remove the dog from the situation and finally wound up having to call the police over this. In the past three weeks my dog, Lucy, has bit a couple of children. She has never inflicted a wound or even left a mark but naturally this kind of behavior is disturbing. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to make my dog understand that not all children are like the ones encountered over this past summer and stop her efforts to bite. I know that her biting has to be due to the abuse from those children because I have four children of my own and she loves them dearly and enjoys playing with them. Some good advice would be greatly appreciated!

Lisa,
There was a thread on this over the last couple of days. Read through it and if you have any questions feel free to ask for clarification. Here is the link to Child Aggression juct click on the link and it should take you right to it.

Thanks for replying, you seem to give the same advice as the vet did. He seems to think over time she will get better with some training modifications, but she must be muzzled around strange children. He also seemed to think having her around children while muzzled was a good idea so she would understand not all kids are a threat to her. So I'll give it a try and see what happens, thanks again.

If she needs to muzzled to be around kids you need help immediately. Go to a professional trainer. Not a VET. Gonna ruffle some feathers here, but vets have like one weekend out of there entire schooling on behavior. You need help very quickly. Muzzle a dog around kids, that'll add to the sterotype.
How about controlled environments?

Well here goes. If this dog needs to be muzzled around KIDS it has in the home or neighbors kids. That's asking for trouble!!
Too many chances of the dog not being muzzled and for whatever reason KIDS being in the area.
If this was my dog, I'd make a decission real fast, might not be the decission I would want, but the right decission.
Not trying to sound like a hard A-s but the kids would come first. Mine and any others that may come into contact with this dog.
It sounds as if this dog was mistreated by some kids, but it doesn't matter as to why he's aggressive but that he is!!!
Sorry but this dog is a huge libility!!!

If you muzzle the dog it may do two things ,help or make the dog more frustrated and then you are just making matters worse .If you are not able to have this dog around kids ,you need to have the dog trained for these situations ,and if the training corrections do not work i would have this dog to sleep. There are to many good dogs in the shelters that could possibly fits your needs.Peter

I get sick and tired of the poor dogs being punished for IDIOT A*SSHOLE BRATS who cause such aggression to begin with. And as far as I'm concerned the parents and the kids deserved to be smacked around for allowing stuff like this to go on.
My suggestion is to get the dog into a good trainer and work on this problem. Explain the situation and go from there.

Karmen, I stand by my thoughts on this dog.
I agree it's a shame the parents of the children & children that TEASED and MISTREATED this dog bear no RESPONSIBILITY for the ills they have caused the dog and it's owner.
What happens if the dog goes to a trainer, returns home and then bites some child or adult.
What do you think should happen then??
Maybe this dog could be placed in a home where no children visit.
Butch's thought's only.
It sounds as if this dog was mistreated by some kids, but it doesn't matter as to why he's aggressive but that he is!!!
Sorry but this dog is a huge libility!!! I hope that I never have to go through this terrible ordeal. I sympathize with the owners, but can't change my mind.

Forgive me because I am tired and cranky but I too stand by my thoughts. I never posted to change your mind Butch. This dog deserves a chance. I mean we use good tax dollars reform murderers in this country and yet we can't give a 10 lb dog a chance with some training? Any dog is a liability and if you own a larger breed the more liability there is to it. At least she is getting help for this dog. This is BS telling this women to put this dog to sleep without seeking professional help first. Get the training and then if the problem still exists move to plan B.
