I recently joined a schutzhund club and as they were working the pups my pup is barking and barking well at the prey and is also getting very fired up. But is wanting to bark at the other dog and only holding the prey for a 20 sec span if that at home I work off the flinks video and she is great at home no other dogs there and a great firm grip. I am asking how to start proofing her of this?
Also when we walk around the neighborhood she sees a dog and the hackles go up and out come the barking and growling even at a distance. Never have had a bad dog experience or bites other then puppies playing with littermates. When we bring her to a place where she can meet another dog such as a friend house or family member after they SLOWLY meet she is fine with that dog and has no problems even plays nicely no fights
I am alittle confused. If you are working in a club - why s yourdog out when other dogs are out being trained?
If you have taken your dog through the work in PREPARING YOUR DOG FOR THE HELPER - and its at least 12 months old it should be out working on the helper.
If its younger than that it has no business being out when other dogs are being worked. This only causes problems - which you already found out.
Go back and do the foundation work yourself. Then when the dog is old enough - bring it to the helper to work by itself.
the Sch. club that I am involved with also has what they call "puppy circle" where all the young dogs and pups are brought out at one time. The helper is in the middle and works all the dogs at the same time with a tug on a rope. Later the more advanced dogs come out one at a time to do sleeve work. I have heard from my breeder that this is the wrong approach. Am I understanding that this is what your a part of?
Your breeder was correct. Circle agitation is old school training. It's purpose was to build drive. There are far better ways to build drive in young dogs.
Good dog training is based on TIMING - TIMING of praise, TIMING on corrections, TIMING on the reaction of the helper to the appropriate response from the dog. This is impossible with circle agiatation. The helper can only focus on one dog at a time, he can only react to one dog at a time. Your dog may be doing the correct thing while the helper is working another dog in the circle and if the helper does not react the moment is lost.
If a dog has drive and the trainer prepares the foundation in bite work himself he will have no need for circle agitation. If you want to learn how to do this get my video PREPARING YOUR DOG FOR THE HELPER - it's a 4 hour DVD http://leerburg.com/310.htm
