We just got a new pup 8 weeks old, to go along with our 3 yr old male. I was wondering if it is normal for the 3 yr old male to mouth the pup. He does not hurt her and it seems like they are playing. I just want to make sure this is normal behavior.
Sounds normal to me! As long as the pup enjoys it I don't see the harm, if she was whining or anything I would put an end to it, but otherwise let em play, good socilation for the pup.
Leute mögen Hunde, aber Leute LIEBEN ausgebildete Hunde!
Mike: The 3yr old male is communicating with the pup by mouthing the pup. You will probably notice that the pup will lick with lowered head and body which is also a communitive submission. All normal in the dog world. As long as the older male is willing to tolerate the pup..take advantage of the older dogs' wisdom for the pup's education and socialization.
Good luck with the addition to your family <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Just remember to make sure the pup bonds with you first and more than it bonds with the older dog. Spend plenty of time alone with the puppy. Welcome to the board.
I would have limited play time between the pup and older (change that to none if protection training is planned) until a bond between you and the pup is created. Although hard to believe a pup will always turn to a dog over a human for leadership.
