I heard that Malinois are prefered in hot climate because they can handle it better than GSD. Law enforcement in those states would go rather with Malinois. Is there some truth behind it? If so, how about cold climate. Is the GSD the better one in cold climate?
I live in Phx, it doesn't come much warmer (109 yesterday). The City of Phx uses GSDs, most of the others use Mals. I think with many Depts the cuoice comes down to Price first, Dept precerence a close second (first in some places), and availability third. Grooming requirements are also a consideration.
Both breeds also do well in the Cold. Jerry lives in Toronto. He runs mostly Mals.
Both breeds are from Northern climates, and will do well in that type of climate.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
I work Mals in extreme heat. I don't think they handle it better phsically, but they handle it better mentally. The handler has to be more careful not to drive the Mal into the ground. Most GSD's will let you know when they need a break. As far as useing the dog as a tool, if I were injured in the desert, I'd rather have a Mal looking for me.
