I have a 6 month old mal. Every now and then when he comes to greet people he tends to go around to thier rear and get in between thier legs and looks up at them from this postion. Kinda like riding a horse. I was wondering if this was a natural instinct or genetic trait of Mal's. I have heard Mal's doing this sort of thing in protection training. Wondering if anyone else has heard of this?
I'm not sure, I do know that my mal around the same age seems to like to bite the insides of my thighs when I play with her.(which I think I need to start discouraging her from doing this as it is really starting to hurt) My breeder says that this is an inherited trait because it has been found that this is a good place to bite a man to stop them and breeders have tried to breed this into their lines. I'm new to the breed so I really can't say for sure.
By the way I think I know what you mean, but you should know that a natural instinct IS a genetic trait. For instance, prey drive is an instinct that has come naturally since these dogs were wolves. We can breed to either improve or reduced these genetic traits.

Yes I think they do that in French Ring Sport. I would advise against this practice for REAL protection training though where I would rather have my dog do a guard or bark and hold out of range of a kick, punch, club or knife.
I would more lean toward it being a genetic trait passed down from he dog's parents or just a trait for that individul dog.
