My Mal is very vocal and "chewy" on the sleeve.
He seems to love the fight, but anticipates the out. We have worked him with releasing the sleeve to calm him, but no success.
Any ideas as to how to calm him down on the bite and have him hold firmly?
Angie, Being vocal on the sleeve is a good indication of the dogs' defense coming out. Chewing could be a number of things ( new to bitework, Previous e-collar misuse, physical problem with the teeth, gums or jaw etc. or the fact that he just may need some grip work). Does he do this when the out is coming or all the time?
I would suggest using a tie back with a bungee. Have the dog get the bite and have the helper stretch the line out. The dog will learn to be firm on the bite because of the tension. I do this with my Mal and it works wonders. Howard knows....he's read my rambling about it. It is very basic training and offers a solid foundation. My Mal was slipping on her bites. She wasn't coming in full and it seemd as though it was as "half ass" effort. 4 weeks of tie backs added back into the training and we're talking a different dog. My dog also anticipates the out....still working on that so I don't have any advice to offer yet.
Lou, after you read this, please do not rip into me....I am young....I have kids. Just be pleasent and offer kind words of encouragement and advice....
The anticipated out with my dog came by surprise.....atleast it seemed that way, thoug I know why now.
I trained my dog the out by playing tug with her and when it was time for the out I would bring her in close to me, hold onto the collar and would tell her Los and would choke up and pull the tug out, then tons of praise. After repeated times of this the dog began outing the item(s) on command. The problem was she associated the out with me touching her collar.
Remember the word of the day is KIND......
i hate to sound like a broken record AGAIN. but here goes: ed sells these lovely training tapes and dvds of bernhard flinks seminars. get them, study them and apply the method. it works! building drive, focus and grip is fantastic....for all levels of training, beginner to advanced. the others are great, too, but that's a good one to start with. if you want to get rid of the hectic behavior and build a calm, clear-headed dog that tape will show you the way.
