I am a first time owner of a Rottie (1.5year old) and I have a question about aloofness. According to the AKC, rotties are supposed to be aloof. But, is it normal that my dog is so aloof that he doesn't like to play with humans or dogs? In fact, he doesn't even greet us when we come home although he will greet strangers, is that normal in the Rotties?
Gata,
In a word No. Every Rottie I have ever meet and that's been a lot of em, have been goofy love bugs, even the SCH titled ones... some more aloof then others. They are jst not shy dogs, and they are for sure people dogs...I'm sure some of the Rottie Breeders can back this statment up.
You have other problems. Did you get this dog as pup? Or just got it?

Indeed, we have had this dog ever since he was a puppy (6 weeks) and he has always been like that. It's kind of boring to have a dog that won't play or even bother to get up unless it's time to eat. In fact, what bothers me the most is that he gets extremely exicited when strangers come over, but could care less when we come home. I find that really strange.
As funny as that is, what VanCamp said, it really might ring true, that is strange....I don't mean to say your not a nice person, but you just might BE boring to your dog.. it's really hard to say unless we knew you personally and saw how you raised your dog.
Try to do more exciting stuff with your dog.. when you come home, lavish him with extra good treats and hype him up! As I have heard, the better actor you are the better your dog will respond.

You say that you have had this dog since he was 6 weeks old. If you would; describe your household and interaction with the dog from the beginning to present date. How have/do you spend your time with the dog?
My experience with rotties is they are generally a little distant with strangers but, THEY LOVE THEIR FAMILIES. When I get home my rott is waiting at the door doing the "wiggle butt dance" it's so cute because he doesnt have a tail. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> You might want to spend more time with your dog and spend some quality time bonding a little more. good luck
