They do come in handy for some things (though I always seem to hold the darn things backwards :rolleyes: ) I used them for UD target work and Sledding/skijoring training. Of course, it probably did not fall under "pure" clicker training, but they were good for marking behaviour in distance work.
Also work well if you want to train wild animals with touch-stick work -- or maybe the raccoon visiting your backyard?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I did find they were good to use to get your dog to come to you from a distance. Not a conventional use, but are good instead of whistles. It is amazing how far that sound travels! Click! and there is your dog drooling in front of you (no, not the bloodhound <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> )
