I know very little about this type of dog, except that it comes from Japan and is unfortunately still used there for fighting.
Why is there such a bad reputation surrounding this dog? How big/heavy do they get, are they intelligent and does anyone own one/know someone who owns one?
I'm researching the breed atm, the consensus is they are NOT good for protection work (having been bred to dog fight). There is at least one breeder I know of that has done some Schutzhund training.
The Tosa is not suitable for Protection Work. Not because they were bred for fighting, but because of the way they fight. When doing protection work, the bark is just as important as the bite in most cases and when showing aggression or defense the Tosa has 200 years of being bred for their stoic nature, ie not barking, showing signs of aggression defense etc.
Physically they would make excellent candidates, if the temperament matches, but the stoicity of the breed would not be much fun to train as a handler, nor as a decoy....LOL
Pick a different breed for protection work. If you are looking at Mastiff type dogs, the most suitable is probably the American Bulldog. Or you can just stick with the rest of the crowd and get one of the herding breeds for it. Easier to train, more maleable and ultimately easier to handle in protection work than the Mastiffs.
