I recently got a call from a new, female, Akita owner. She has a purchased a male pup and is asking for help in making it a good companion.I met the dog and he seems to have a very stable temperment.I'm an obedience trainer but my experience is with Rotties and German Shepards. My first advice was that she neuter this five month old before he gets his first shot of testosterone. As much socialization as she is able to do is taking place. She is committed to training but I fear she will never be able to stop the dog if he displays any aggression to another animal or human. She's fairly small and the dogs father is 120lbs. Thanks for any suggestions Ken Mathews
My experience is that Akitas generally do not mature as early as the GS or Rottweiler. I would suggest early obedience training and socialization as an alternative to early neutarization.
Thanks Kevin,I agree that early socialization is critical to all working breeds if they are to make good companions. My thinking about the early neutering, before he gets his shot of testosterone, is that it might him less apt to want to challenge other male dogs that he is sure to meet.I'm not sure why she chose a male in the first place??
Thanks for your response
