Howard, Akitas were originally a bear hunting breed used to hunt sun bears in the moutains of japan. They are very willful like the chow breed in a lot of ways. They also usually only accept one alpha and all the rest fall under them at least in there eyes. This can lead to an eventually nasty dog fight. This I've seen time and time again with my Aunts breeding pairs.
Aren, be warry when the akitas get in groups of two this was originally the way they hunted the bear.I've seen people try to get tough with them and all it seems to trigger is their hunting drive. They will likely become bolder in that case.

Chris, Thanks for the info. Do you think there are any in this country which would be considered in their pure form? I know that the breeding of the German Shepherd here has been an abysmal failure as far as quality animals. Ive seen my female fight and pitting it against a bear seems like an even match.
Like any good breeder you need to find someone who breeds to better the dog not their wallet. With that said there are a few true forms of the akita in the the u.s. although i personally do not recommend them as a dog for people with a family or other dogs.(That whole one alpha problem)If you wish to see a Quality akita breeder go to http://www.akitas.com they are show breeders but they have not tried to knock out the dog nature like most others do. hope this helps you.
