I was just wondering if these dogs are just black mal's or a totally seperate breed? are they the same as mal's temperment wise? and just as good at protection sport? ive seen pictures of them they seem to look kinda like Colies.
I believe they are a separate breed. So far I have seen 3 Groenendaels get tested for Prey Drive and all 3 did not have hardly any Drive at all. IMO they don't even come close to a Mal.
they are a color variation, they are fluffy so the old ladies started breeding and took away anything they might have had. Occasionally one pops up that works.
The Belgian Sheepdog recognized as such by the AKC is a black longcoat. The ones we see here in the US are really crap so far as work is concerned. I had one some years ago that was out od a schhI sire. Horrible little dog.
But, occasionally one does crop up. there was one up on CO a number of years back that was great, a bitch that never produced herself, she was SchHIII and some FR titles thrown in as well.
In a thread about black mals on this board there was some great info on groendel that resulted in a bunch of black mal crosses still seen frequently in the KNPV.
They can be outstandingly beautiful dogs. Too bad the ones that work are few and far between. But, the prettier they are they less chance the emphasis will be on performance breeding.
I had a Greondale many years ago. Interesting dog to work with. She learned protection training by watching a GSD we had. She was different to work with as she was absolutly silent. She tended to work on her belly, like they would herd sheep. She would sneek up on people and then grab them on the butt. There were a couple of times when we had people doing things they shouldn't and she would sneak out of the house. All you would see is a shadow going across the yard until she came up behind them. She brought us many 2-4 inch square pieces of pants, and sent more than a few people screaming down the street. I swear to God she would smile when she came back.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
