I'm trying to decide between Schutzhund Training in Drive or Purely Positive Training.
My dog is a pet dog, rescue German Shepherd, I've been training her 2 yrs with treats, frisbee and tug as reward, plus corrections in some situations, (high distraction areas, such as squirrels, loose dogs, deer etc.)
I want the book with the most practical advice, I dislike reading 'purely positive training mantra's' and Karen Pryorish preaching.
I do go to Rally Obedience Trials, and plan some casual agility. I like to train for fun and challenge, and want my dog to have fun. Building drive sounds good. While I'm strict about basic manners, and off-leash recalls, I want all advance obedience to be done on a motivated basis.
Soooo... which book should I get?
Thanks in advance, Ingrid & Dynamo
I'd tell you to go with SchH Obedience Training in Drive by Dildei and Booth, but with with this in mind:
If you look through both books closely, they're not that much different, in my opinion. Both were written by Booth ( noticed the wording of "with Gottfried Dildei" on the cover of the SchH Obedience Training in Drive, the book is more hers than Gottfried's. The "Purely Positive" is written in a sweeter tone, and delves more into her philosophy of the human-dog bond, but the training methods don't different by much.
So for the more practical advice, just go with the SchH Ob training in drive.
Thank you. It sounds like Sch.Training in Drive is the book I'll get. I just want a straight up 'how to' book. I don't think I'll be teaching Dynamo everything, but it's something to do.
