Our lab can pop tennis balls in about 15 minutes and chew a red kong in about a week. Has anybody found something that will stand up to that kind of dog. He isn`t supervised most of the time so I`m looking for something that will keep his attention for long periods without breaking or becoming a choking hazard. He has a tendency to gulp things.
Definitely the black kong. When our GSD was a puppy his sharp teeth could chew the top two rows of the kong off. Once he got duller, adult teeth the black kong lasted forever.
We also tried a Galileo Bone (nylabone product) - the Souper ver. is pretty good size. It's pretty hard and our GSD hardly made a dent in it. Your mileage may vary <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Cathy,
Chewing tennis balls can cause long term damge to your dog's teeth. I believe Ed has an article on it, or try the "search" function here on the forum.
I know about tennis balls being bad for his teeth but my parents keep giving them to him. He chews off the fabric first anyway. Thank goodness he doesn`t eat it.
There's always a first time, and if he swallows a chunk he can choke or require surgery. I'd go for the beef knuckle AND a black kong for some variety.
are nylabones safe if the dog chews it apart and possibly eats part of it? I came home yesterday to see he had bit the end off of it. i took it away because i didnt want him to eat it if it is bad for him. I am looking for safe toys that will last a little while as my boy chews everything apart.
thanks Paula
I have a black kong and a small black tire. The people that make kong had some tennis ball-like toys that would last about a week. So I found this tire at Petco. We just play tug and fetch with it. It has held up quite well, but I also dont let my dogs sit around and chew on it. The kong I routinely let them chew on it, no problems.
