I have a person considering buying one of my male GSDs. I have only talked with her one the phone, she has a Rot and Pit mix. She now wants one of my babies. Any suggestions as to questions to ask her? I am leary of selling this one to her since she has 2 other potentially dangerous breeds, one of which she says is crate trained. She says she does not have a fenced in yard.
Any suggestions?

Danger, danger, Will Robinson! Run away!
This woman has a dog pack (your post isn't clear, but it sounds like she has 2-3 dogs) and does not have a fenced yard. I'm not a breeder, but FWIW, I wouldn't let such a person have any dog I cared about. It's a recipe for neglect.

1. It's your business, your dogs, etc.
2. I wouldn't sell anything or do business with anyone I didn't feel comfortable with.
3. No fence, perfect out for you.
4. The thing to consider is if you feel you won't be able to get rid of the litter and you want to give it a fighting chance. Some might think it has a better one in a animal shelter though than to give it to this person?

I would want to meet her in person before making any decissions.I don't think you can go on what type of home she will provide based on what types of breeds she owns now.It is more about the level of care that is going to be provided.I would sit down and think of the questions you want answered before you talk to her next. One of the things I would question is why she feels she needs a third dog.Anything past two dogs turns it into a kennel situation.I would also insist that her yard be fenced. How does she contain her dogs now? Will the puppy be kept seperate?Who is her Vet?Any good refrences? What level of training is on her dogs?Go with your gut feeling,if something doesn't seem right it probably isn't.Good Luck.

As for giving the dog "a fighting chance," I'd much rather give it to a breed rescue organization than an owner such as you describe. Rescue people would never give a pup to such a home.

Excellent suggestions from the above posts. Our Humane Society here requires a home visit with potential adopters. I would highly suggest this and take the opportunity to note how healthy and mannered her other dogs are. (That is if you still consider selling her a pup.)
Does she plan to let the pup roam the house with the other dogs? Stay in the crate all day to be tormented by the other dogs? Scary scenario.
Be wise in your home selections and don't rush it, even if you have to keep a couple of pups for a bit. Good Luck.

Thanks for all the responce. I have talked to her on the phone again. She is reconsidering not buying the pup because of my 'rudeness'. She works 12 hours some days and 4 hours on other days. I asked her why get another dog if she already has 2 dogs already. She did not like being asked and began acting irritable. I think she is better off just staying away from my pups. These shepherd pups are no high quality work or show dogs, but they are wonderful dogs just the same!

When we did do some breeding back several years ago,I had a pretty iron clad contract.(1) First of all if the people did not have a fenced in yard, they were not even considered for having one of my pups. (2) I also had a buy back clause in my contract, that if they no longer wanted the dog that I had first option to buy the dog back at the origional purchase price.(3)Check their vet references.
I put a lot of time, energy, and love into those pups, and their well being was always more important to me than if someone got irritated.
I have to say that you should follow your gut feelings. If you feel uneasy about this person, don't sell her the pup,

Tammy,
I would definitely not sell a pup to this person. I, too, sell pups only with a pretty rugged contract and, even if the buyer appeared to meet all the qualifications, I still will not sell one of my pups to someone if I am not completely comfortable with that person.
Her "reconsidering because of your rudness" is simply an excuse. She does not want to be told no. She will want it to appear to be her own decision not to buy one of your pups. My advice is LET HER. The less you have to deal with someone like that, the better. There is no law that says you have to sell a pup to her.
Best of luck to you!
