Hi folks! Just joined your website. Have a question from you folks who have a ton of knowledge on the czech gsd. I just purchased my first czech gsd, after 3 american shepherds. Her
grandfather on the father's side is Lord von Gleisdreieck and on the mothers side the grandfather is Comfy Divci Plamen. I believe this is pretty good breeding? Her size is very small. She is almost 11 months old and 52 lbs. Most people believe this dog is not a German Shepherd due to her small stature. Is this common in Czech gsd's?
My 5 year old female bounces in and around 60 pounds. She has produced males much larger than I ever expected tho! 10 months old, 79 pounds, and NOT FAT. The stud was only 80 himself- must have been the miracle grow...
So, I don't think I would box the small size into Czech dogs. There are small Belgian dogs, small German dogs, small Dutch....
The "American" GSD is larger overall when compared to the European dogs, with the exception of the show lines from Europe.
I'm no expert but, I think Lord vom Gleisdreieck
was a DDR dog. If , you google search you will find he was a medium size male. Here's a webpage you might find helpful. http://www.eastgermanshepherd.com/lord.html It has a picture and his pedigree.
My almost 2 female of west german working lines is also smaller than what people are used to seeing at 56 lbs but she is rock solid and very agile.
but if you look back at some of the old pictures she looks much more like something of the 1920s in size and build....so it is small relative to today but is it really that small?
Thank's for all your input. Yes I'm sorry she is a DDR Czech cross and is very agile and quick. The trainer called her a she devil. Thanks for the additional website info.
52 lbs is within the world standard. Americans are so used to seeing oversized dogs, they don't even know what the standard is anymore!
FCI (World Standard):
Males:
Withers height 60-65cm (23-25 inches)
weight 30-40 kg (66-88 lbs)
Females:
Withers height 55-60cm (21-23 inches)
weight 22-32kg (48-70 lbs)
"Length of torso exceeds height at the withers by 10 - 17%."
AKC
The desired height for males at the top of the highest point of the shoulder blade is 24 to 26 inches; and for bitches, 22 to 24 inches. (There is no weight parameter)
"The German Shepherd Dog is longer than tall, with the most desirable proportion as 10 to 8½."
I have a small bitch as well. People tell me she is mixed with various other things because she couldn't possibly be that small. America is getting dummer and dumer <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
