I subscribe to an email list and the subject of epilepsy in dogs going back to Don vom Rolandsteich has come up. I am picking up a puppy in two weeks that goes back to him. Has anyone heard or had any problems regarding this?
My male goes back to Don through Jim von der Stadt Schmalkalden. He just turned eight and has never had any problems with epilepsy, for what it's worth.
I'm not sure what the inheritance mode of epilepsy is, but it's most likely to be recessive which will mean that it probably won't show up in dogs that aren't strongly linebred on this dog (or this dog's close relations), assuming that the dog in question is either epileptic or carrying the genes for it. It doesn't help that there's no-one collecting this information. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
Purely out of nosiness, have you an affected dog? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Dei, In reference to your question I am picking up a puppy next week that goes back to Don v Rolandsteich and was wondering if epilepsy should be a concern of mine.
I owned a Don son - I have never heard anything about epilepsy in the line. What I did see was rank drive ass holes with real big heads (this was in his sons) Don was imported into the country and went sterile. I am not a fan of this dog. The son I had was not stable.
I remeber that weird dog out of Don you had. Strange animal.
I had some experience with 7-8 male progeny of Don's. They had big heads and crap for play and prey drives. It seemed they were late maturing dogs that had to be started in defense in the bitework. I never liked them much. But, what awesome heads and color.
There was also some speculation that Don's actual lineage was not what was on paper. Something about the only animal produced by either the sir or dam or both. Hints at creating papers for a dog (easy to do since the pups weren't tattooed until six months in the DDR)
The son I have isn't stable either, his mother says it's my fault, something about genes. Leadership by example, that kind of thing. Oh, I thought we were talking about kids! My bad.

This is only experience of my dog. a 21 month old bitch which the overgrand dad of the fathers site was Dom Von Rolandsteich. And overgrand dads of mother site was Alf von Konersee and Dom von haus Iris.
She is big for a bitch 63 cm but it is not that her head is bigger than her body. She is crazy for the bal and has prey in overdrive.
Now I'm not sure what you mean with "crap for play and prey drives" and "rank drive ass holes" ?
I heard that in many cases when stud dogs get bought up by the US, these dogs are near their peak or past their peak. Now I'm sure that this was not with every stud dog.
