I read a book once by Joel McMains called "Manstopper." He felt that muzzle training was not good for personal protection dogs that is was
A)Too Dangerous
B)Overly Aggressive
C)Unnecessary
D)Inappropriate
He feels this is a family pet not a war dog. He says it can create a "distrustful biting machine."
Is this True or BS?
(These are quotes out of a book, I don't know the man)
Well that's what I thought exactly, I just wanted to check because I didn't know if this guy was a major part of the protection dog community.
That book of his was very odd. He talked about feeding his dogs 2 to 3 times a day, and many things he said in his book on training were totally opposite of what I have learned here.
On a scale of o to 5 stars the book Manstopper by Joel McMains gets ZERO stars. It's not worth reading even if you could check it out of your local library. The author is clearly confused.
Most of this silly ass book is the STORY of he and this Helper In Training learning how to "agitate" dogs. Literally writen as a story or play. There is absolutly nothing of substance in this book. Nothing. . .
The few tips on safety were even stupid.
If you want to read a good book about canine aggression and how to learn to be an agitator, read Decoys and Aggression: A Police K9 Training Manual, by Stephen MacKenzie. This book has some substance to it, lots of specific stuff about working in different protection drives (aggressions). There is even a little piece on muzzle work. I think this book is good for anybody training in protection, not just police service.
Ed sells this one, by the way. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Speaking of Bullsh!+. Sorry but I did not have anywhere else to put this and with the subject of Bullsh!+ in this thread, Then here goes.
We belong to some type of mailing list from the IAMS Dog food company where they send us a monthly magazine on dogs, etc.
The new one just arrived and it was the winter 2002 issue of You and Your Dog friends for life
Front cover they tell of a section dedicated to Police Dog Heros under the heading Badge of Honor.
So my wife Eva comes running into the office here and says that they are making a reference to a Malinois named Allee (ALI)sp. I bred and started that dog they were talking about that we sold to the Houston Police K9 unit so I was pleased to read a piece on him in the Iams Magazine but man did I stop dead in my tracks when I read the following section direct after the piece about the mal we sold to Houston PD.
Get ready here comes the Bullsh!+ and I quote from page 15
" MIKE McCONNERY,owner and head trainer at Baden K9-- The largest tactical dog training facility in the world---says..................."
Now list members, this is real Bullsh!+ LOL, somehow he sucked IAMS into this piece of free Ad crap.
