What methods are suggested to prepare a dog for gun fire in trials?

Does your dog react badly to gunfire already? I have taken my pup out shooting sience he was a little guy, and no .38 either, we are talking .45's .44's Ak's and a flethra of shotguns and high powered rifles. He has no problem with gunfire, I just play ball with him while my cusions rip shit up around us. I come from a real gun nut family hahaha hell my 79 year old grandma packs a .38 in her purse everywhere she goes, so we can't have any gun shy dogs around.. that would be a problem.
It is my understanding they are afraid of it or not, it is a genitic trait. It's just like any other type of training, start slow and far away fire a few rounds, and see what he does, if he reacts you need to distract him and make it really fun, soon his will ignore shots because they are common place in his world.

One thing I was never clear on was that although it's a genetic thing, could a dog be afraid of it if once they were taken from the kennel they were never exposed to it anymore?

Is that kinda of "if the tree falls in the woods and nobody is around, does it make a sound questions?
Please rephrase I don't have a clue what your question is there Brad. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Meaning if the dog was once immune to gun fire, had hard nerves, etc. BUT it wasn't trained or imprinted correctly in that area after it was already purchased through the months the person had it, would it then be possible for the dog to fear gun fire or loud noises?

Brad,
I would think that reintroducing the dog to gunfire would cure any problem.
If for some reason a traumatic event took place during this period you may have a different route to take.
My GSD handles gunfire well, does much better in my preseance. This could also be a factor.
It's strange he still doesn't like thunder.

Well this is a theorectical question for me, just out curiosity. As for my dog, he's scared of both. I have never figured out why, I mean he's from "American lines," lmao! (JOKE)
Your right about the thunder, I remember Ed mentioning he's seen some that are immune to gun fire but some still are afraid of thunder.

I personally think that a once gun immune dog, always a gun immune dog, he/she may have a slight reaction after a few years of no gunfire, but will recover quickly.

it's kinda funny, but our bitch, Kora, we thought she had a problem with gunfire. She would focus on where it was coming from and you could see her building up. One day, we were working the obedience routine, had a blind on the field, our friend was shooting a .38 Special with blanks about 30yds away. It finally clicked what the "problem" was, she's such an "animal" in protection, and the gunfire from that distance actually sounded like a whip crack! She was getting up in drive ready to attack the helper! Once we figured that out, we knew it wasn't an aversion, but rather a "miscommunication", with her thinking it's time to bite, rather than thinking it was something to be ignored. All the time we were working on gunfire conditioning and all it was doing was getting her in "protection mode".
