help i have a 2.5 year old gsd he is great, but he will not bark on command. i have tryed treats his toys. but he will not bark for theme.his other commands are real strong. no prolems there. such as sit down stay come. i even use some hand commands which he obeys. what can i do to get him to bark on command. thanks
Is there something that makes him bark on his own?
The first thing to try is backtie him and frustrate him, praise any and all squeaks, grunts, boofs, etc. and reward those.
I have only had one dog that didn't work with, but he would bark at the vacuum... even if it wasn't on, all I had to do was push it around. It was a little odd, but after a bunch of pseudo vacuuming I was able to get an association with barking and the command, sans vacuum.
He was an odd little dog...
I didn't come up with that method all on my own... I was friends with a Ford dealer who used to put his Great Danes in his commercials. They used a weed wacker to get the dogs to bark "answers" and then edited the weedwacker out of the commercial. Do what works.
Tie your dog leash or have some one hold him. Now all you have to do is tease and frustrate him with a raggy or ball, i think the rag works best - but dont let him get it - you have to get him really riled up.
He may well be barking now - as soon as he does give him a command like 'speak' and and give him his reward - the rag. Now each time he barks keep repeating the command - demanding more barks from him each time before you give him the rag.
If after you have him riled up (in drive) and he isnt barking then stop dead and hold up the rag out of reach and make it motionless - He should begin to bark at it, give the command and reward.
This worked for me and i had my 2 trianed to bark on command in a couple of days.
He will omly bark at another dog who enters the yard or some one he dont now. enters the the yard when i am not out side. if we are in the yard with him he is fine. i will try the back tie and see what happens thanks again for the info.
I tryed the tie back teased him with his ball that he loves to play with he would never grunt bark are any thing just tryed to get it away from me i kept it just out of his reach also tryed treats he just wont bark any more ideas i havent tryed it with the towel or rag but will try it tomrrow. any other ideas thanks
Try backing up about thirty feet and get the dog to alert on you. The dog may be too much in prey when you are so close with the toy. Another thing that works is to put them in a kennel or behind a chainlink fence. Excite the dog from a distance with a whip pop or something. It takes a little skill to build the bark in some dogs. Remember to reward the bark quickly with food or a bite.
My thanks also, just got Max to bark using you all's suggestions. now Max is barking for everything he wants, now how do you shut him up?
Becareful what you wish for. My GSD was way to easy to get to speak, and now is more vocal than ANY terrier I've ever owned.
