Was realy glad to see this section open up. I'm looking for advice on how to deal with STUPID people, since most here deal with or train working dogs (not little foo foo dogs) i would be interested in how others would handle people who think your dog should behave like everyone elses pets and then get upset when they get a bad reaction, (total strangers trying to tell my male to sit or worse down) he doesnt take kindly to total strangers telling him what to do. Also people who can't or won't keep their pets or children (not sure which is worse) under control. I am verrrrry carefull with both of my dogs, not because i dont trust them I do, but because the majority of people are idiots. Its them i don't trust.

That's easy.........keep your dog away from stupid people.
If I see someone approaching my dogs I quickly say" Don't pet that dog, it is a working dog" or "Please ignore that dog, it's in training" .
I raise all my dogs like this and if I have people over at my house and I think they may do some dumb move with my dogs, then my dogs are put in a separate part of the house.

I also train at odd times. Late at night or early in the morning. Usually when I go out I don't see anybody, or the people I do see have their dogs under good control.
The other thing I do is put the dog in a sit or down before they get there. If they are comming fast I put the dog in a down so I have better control and step between the dog and the person. If the person looks questionable I may even turn and go the other way.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird. |

Or what about those who after you tell them it's a working dog, they simply haaaaaaaave to test the dog??? For me, those are the worst. The dog always ends up testing well, and they, well ... maybe that's what Depends are for????

Teach your dogs to automatically attack stupid people. This can be quite effective.

Stories about stupid people....
I have a 5-foot fence around my yard. Neighbor walks up, slooowly in curiosity, stares my dog down who was carrying on behind the fence as soon as he saw her....she sloowwwwwly walks up, frontal, bent over body posture, keeps staring at him and dog snarls, leaps up and down the fence, tries to bite the wire, spit is flying...and she innocently asks: "Does he biiiite?"
Guy delivers my new portable building. Amish looking guy, really sweet demeanor. Walks up to the fence to eyeball the location they were looking to put my building...dog does his job, snarls, carries on, leaps up the fence. "Does he bite?" I say:"Yes, please do NOT put your fingers through the fence! He will bite". "Ohh, but ALL dogs like me!" I say: "That may be, but I assure you, this one is NOT friendly, he WILL bite you." Guy walks up close face to face with my dog, stares at the him, who now leaps up a foot higher than the fence, snarling, barking, acting like a junk yard dog. Guy says:" But I am really good with dogs. They all like me. Can I pet him?" I say: "TRUST me, he will bite you! Do NOT pet him!!!" I guess three's the charm, guy finally got busy putting up the building LOL

Thanks for the ideas, I do watch both very carefully, Particularly my male, Right now we are flooded with tourists, "ugh" I like the idea of teaching the dog to attack stupid people, it would not be as hard as you think around here, but i'm afraid the dog would get really tired of going after people.
Acually what prompted this was a few times in the past but primarily the middle of last week a 17 or 18 year old (tourist) was watching my dog do his mr bad a** routine while i was inside gas station, boy stood watching dog so i stuck my head out of the store and told him to be carefull that hes not friendly, (he could not get his whole head out of window, just his nose). Kid looks at me then back at dog and walks up to him and holds his hand out for dog to smell, dog smells him then gruffed at him (1/2 bark 1/2 growl) If he could have gotten his entire head out this jerk would have lost a few fingers. The only satisfaction i got was watching this kid jump back about 4 feet with a really surprised look on his face.
I work my dogs like i drive. Very defensivly, I try to make sure i know whats going on around me and what others are doing at all time.

Can you stand one more stupid person encounter. My dog is not a working dog but he is big and mean looking and a person with even a scintilla of good judgement would think better then to mess with him or me. A few weeks ago I was bicycle riding with my dog when all of a sudden I heard loud quick footsteps running behind me and a male voice yelling woof, woof, woof. I should have just kept going but my dog was now in full alert/ aggressive mode and this was somewhat daunting for me while on a bike. So I jumped off the bike, with snarling dog in tow straight towards this idiot yelling what the heck(well I didn't exactly use heck) do you think you are doing...do you want to get your "heckin" face bit off. I never saw anyone run so fast. On a stupid scale of 1-10, he was a twenty.

If it's any consolation, I have the opposite problem. Auster loves everyone, but they are afraid of her (walk on the other side of the street afraid) or just don't want to pet her. Her problem is that she will bark and wag her tail as high as she can hold it in a very playful way but most people don't understand that it is playful .
Ooooo, maybe you should have a muzzle hanging out of your pocket. It the person can see it I bet they will at least think twice.
