There was an incident last night involving my dog that kind of confused me. I know that someone here will be able to shine some light.
We went to my friend's house and enjoyed the hot tub outside. At one point I got out and sat down on one of the chairs and put my dog in a down beside me. My friends were goofing off and one of them picked up his wife and said he was going to throw her in with her clothes on. Of course she started screaming and they started struggling (wasn't serious just a couple of adults goofing off). My dog just stood up, ran up to the guy and before I could react bit him really hard. I mean really hard, we were debating whether or not he should go to the hospital to get stitches.
How do I explain his behaviour? I mean I know he would have done this if it was me, but he has only seen my girlfriend twice. After the incident he was copletely fine with the guy. I never would have expected that my dog would react this way to a complete stranger

Musta been a GSD, right?
With all due seriousness... this is a German breed of dog. Not known for its sense of humor (except around those nearest and dearest).
I don't bring goofy people around my dogs. That's my way of dealing with the natural protectiveness that is inherent in the breed.

Nope, it wasn't a GSD. It was a doberman .
From now on no more goofy people, I just didn't think he would react this way to a stranger. Everyone knows not to mess with me

I have friends with Dobes and I WOULD NOT act goofy around them (another German breed with even less sense of humor than the GSD). Most of your protection breeds don't like to see monkey business with women. I could give you plenty of examples. It would have been nice if you had a call-off command for the dog, but I am not going to say that he acted inappropriately.

Just as a side note about dog bites. Unless they are in a facial area or there is a lot of tearing you want to avoid stitches as puncture wounds have to heal from the inside out. So, if you are around dumb people again, don't get stitches unless it is bad. 4 holes isn't bad... half an arm muscle hanging is ...

I agree that he didn't act inappropriately, but I just can't get over the fact that he would care enough that someone else was "getting hurt". I mean it didn't even cross my mind that he would bite when the person i question was a complete stranger.
He is not protection trained or anything of that sort so I don't have call-off command. The only command I have for him that's close is STOP! and he stops whatever he is doing. But it all happened so fast that before I reacted he already did what he did. He didn't make a sound. No growl, no bark he just bolted and bit him. Just like that.
Well, taught me a lesson. No more goofin off when Mr. Peacekeeper is around

That's pretty much what I meant when I said "no goofy people." People I trust to be around my dogs are people who will understand it when I say, "Hey, knock that shiznit off--the dogs don't like it."
Then you've got your rocket scientists who are either too dim to understand that they are risking a painful dog bite by engaging in the kind of behavior you mention, or may actually be trying to bait the dogs to see if they can get a reaction. Plenty of both types out there. They don't get past my front door.

Well the thing is he didn't have puncture wounds. My dog bit him in the lower back area. Very close to the butt so there isn't really a lot of skin or muscle to grab. He gave him a whole full mouth bite. There was four tears. Like the teeth went in and then I guess when he closed his mouth he ripped the flesh. But thanks for the tip anyways

Yeah, I got one of those on the stomach about a week or so ago. First time I had worked my young dumb male since my other dog passed away and he missed the toy and got my stomach instead....
That is what I get for having chub there
Anyway, they look really bad, but really aren't. I had the rainbow colored stomach for a week and the scabs just came off.... Next time I try to work butthead after a week of no work I will throw the ball a bit first...

I bet that guy won't try to do that again..

Ouch, yeah that must have hurt. My dog missed his toy once too and he got me right in the boob. OUCH!!!
Yeah if the guy has any brains (hmmmm) he won't be doing stuff like that
I know a thing or two about idiots teasing dogs and trying to get a reaction. Just last week I was at the petstore getting dogfood. I left the dogs in the SUV. When I came back some guy was hitting the window and snarling at the dogs. And then he had the nerve to tell me "you got some viscious dogs there, better keep them muzzled" x10
I wonder if he would have been so tough if there wasn't a glass seperating them
