My seven mo old mal seems to be doing very well on her bite work and I don't want to do anything to decrease her drive. She has developed th habit of biting me and my wife when she gets excited. It usually happens when we return home. I know that she is trying to be affectionate and/or playful but I am not sure I want this to become a permanent habit (It can be pretty painful when she pinches the backs of my legs). Can anyone offer me some advice on this. I want her to stop without slowing her progression in bitework.
Re-Direct, Re-Direct, Re-Direct. This very thing happend to me as well. I made a habbit of having the ball with me when I came in and instantly threw the ball, then with that in his mouth, he can't bite and will forget all about biting you.
After a while of this, all should be good. Now my dog will search around for ANYTHING to put in his mouth and run around "muffle barking" when I return... sounds like "Brrr Ruuu Ruuu Ruuuu" with a sock or shoe or towel or ball in his mouth. Bottom line, I re-Directed his mouth to something he can bite when excited and actually enhanced his prey while doing it.
Cheers
Lonny

Thank you. I will try this. She also does this in the morning or whenever she has been in her crate and we let her out. I think I can do the same thing in this situation. Also, I forgot to include this question in my last post... We have also had trouble with her house training.(which is why I titled the post "house training") She does very well going to the bathroom outside when we let her out. However, she will never "let us know" when she has to go. She will simply hold it for a long time until she goes out. There have been a couple of times when we have tried to force her to let us know by not letting her out for a while. She held it for as long as she could and then peed in the house when she couldn't hold it any longer(she never when to the door and scratched or whined or anything) How can I get her to tell me when she needs to go? My other house dog will scratch the door when she needs to go, so we only take her out when she asks to. I would like my mal to do the same.
