A lot of dogs will bark when behind a fence or tied out. It is not necessarily indicative of a protective dog. Put the same dog on the other side of the fence and things suddenly change. The dog no longer feels safe and you begin to see a different dog.
BoB, Import or move, that is what I would do! They are bred like that here too, but there are some workers as well. Again you have to sift through the fluff balls to get what you want.
beast of buden, yes iam from UK, have you any info on the rotts that A1K9 sell, there must be some working lines as he seems to sell quite a lot. I have managed to find a trainer who owns and works his 4 dobes (turns out same breeding as mine) dutch line, my dog is same breeding both sides from a show dog nemesis feo v koespsel whose parents were both ch show dogs and SCH 111, taking the dobe for try out at the weekend so will know one way or another what he is like, managed to find someone using dobes in security work log on to http://www.Top Dog Security.co.uk.
