I was wondering if anybody knew by experience of any good supplement(s)to give to ease hip displasia? We just rescued a two year old that has moderate hip displasia. In saying that I mean that he is quite mobile but certain conditions flair his condition up.He has extreme stiffness in the morning to the point that we do not allow him on the tile floor until he has warmed up a bit on the carpet or he has problems getting around. He has difficulty sitting straight, always flops over on one hip and he pees like a horse(cannot cock his leg)He comes to work with me and if I don't give him enough crate time by evening it is very noticable that he is having trouble walking. On the other hand I don't like to crate him too much as he is young and still wants to go,go,go.His hips don't bother him while running around but he sure pays for it later.I also don't want him to loose condition as I don't think that would help his hips either.I take him swimming often,as weather permits.I feed Canadai Dry with Moist mixed in and as time permits I offer homecooked meals as a substitute about seven meals a week.(I feed 3x per day)A few days a week I throw in a bit of kelp,Super C,garlic and a Multi-Vit.I recently started him on supplement called Nupro but it is too early to see any results.Your expertise would be very much appreciated!!!I would like to go as natural as possible. Thanks a bunch.
Hi, try glucosamine and chrondroitin. Make sure that you use them together for best results. I had a Golden retriever with bad hips and this helped her quite a bit. If you plan on keeping this dog you might want to consider surgery. Total hip replacement is very costly, so you might want to consider triple pelvic osteotomy surgery. There are several websites that offer good advice, one such is petinfo.com. Good luck
My 7 yr old gsd female rescued has HD and one of the things she is very afraid of the kitchen floor once she got excited and fell, i have problem getting the to do the down, cause she always had to circle before laying down. she bunny hops when she runs. the HD is noticable when she walks. so what i do is just try to make life easier for her, i watch her weight, don't over excerise her. all and all she is still pretty spunky.
Thanks Kim and Tammy, both of your info. is very much appreciated! There seems to be quite a few options as regards to treatment it is just hard to decide what may be best.I feel a bit better since I did more research as I have realized that there are many dogs that live pain free that have hip displaysia.I have never owned a dog with this condition so I would like to gain as much knowledge as possible. Thanks again,
Andy
