I took my GSD Shadow to the park today. There were at least 40-50 people around at all times and 10-20 dogs. My dog is 12 weeks old today and he did not try to run and get anyone or any other dog. When people came up to me they would pet him and he liked that and when other dogs came up he would just sniff them and loss interest. One dog chased my dog around for a few moments "on the lesh" But nothing big.
Is it strange that he did not try to run after anyone. He stayed my side the whole time.
I think this is great don't get me wrong but I just wanted to make sure this was a good attitute for my dog to have.
Socialization is great but be VERY careful of your young pup around dogs you don't know...especially adults.
Hopefully the chase was just a short "game" type play but be careful...you are alpha and you must protect your pup at this age. If not this can turn into alot of issues with the pup.
I go to puppy classes for my young pups for socialization only because they are around other young pups in a controlled environment.
Have fun...you have the right idea....the more socialization the better. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
There is nothing wrong that he didn't chase another dog yet. The more he gets exposed to stuff like this the more confident he'll get and he will start to run after (with) other dogs. Maybe more than you want.
John, I would recommend NOT taking him around a lot of other dogs, at least untill he gets all of his shots. Also, look up the article on dog parks (dogs running loose together) It can be an invitation to trouble, and one bad expierence can ruin a puppy.
Are you asking if the puppy should have not have been friendly to people and other dogs? if so, than at 12 weeks you can't expect puppy to be anything but a puppy. he trusts that you will protect him, not the other way around. You don't want him to be dog agressive. I agree, keep him away from strange dogs, he can get hurt.
I would be glad that my dog was more into hanging out with me than ditching me for the first dog he saw at the park. Also I would be glad that he has enough confidence that he's not afraid of strangers. In my book those our great things.Remember you are still in the prime imprinting period in the pups life, therefor I would be controling the enviroments so as not to let any bad or undesireable behaviors to develop and also promote all the good behaivors, this is a short time in the pups life but very important in developing its adult personality. Continue to promote the tight bond between the two of you and controlled exposure.(dont go to the pet store with him you dont know if those other dogs have had shots or whatyou might track home)
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
