Some countries in Europe now require a dog be chipped even if they have a tattoe before they are allowed to leave the country. I only tattoo my dogs - I may have to consider chips some day but I will never walk away from Tattoos - if a dog is stolen the police do not need a wand to verify a tattoo -
I would be interested in hearing if someone knows the laws on this in Europe - not rumors please.
The tattoo is not for finding a lost dog it is for registering your dog so you can compete in sch trials. When you intro yourself to the judge he will check the dogs ear for the tattoo. It is part of the trial.
Ed,
I have an 18 mo from Europe that I was told was tattooed, but I'll be darned if I can find it.
The vet and I both looked. Is there one area where they are routinely tattooed?
I had him microchipped. I was told the company provided free wands to county shelters across the country.
Don't know if that is true or not.
Erin
Don't have the specifics but there are two different Micro Chip's in production. It takes two different readers. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
QUESTION???
Do all shelters have readers for both Chips?
QUESTION???
How many Numbers required and how many Letters, or does it matter?
Well I do know that as from January 1st, 1993, all puppies born in Denmark had to have either tattoos or microchips. I know that to be so because I was in the country at the time the law came into effect.
I don't know how it's played out since, but the hope was that by making sure that every last dog had some form of postitive identification, it'd eventually reduce the number of stray or abandoned dogs with no traceable owner.
