I'm getting a puppy in April and want to do schutzhund work with her. She is from a kennel across the country from me and I will not be able to pick out the pup I like. The breeder knows what I want, but how do you test a puppy at 8 weeks or under for working ability?
Go to the list of training articles on this web site. Under the section on 'Working with puppies' there is one that give the Flinks test for puppies as well as others. They are excellent. I would want the breeder to administer the tests - exactly as laid out here- and share the results with you.
I would also want to talk to other people who have gotten puppies from this breeder and see if they were satisfied with the drives and nerves of the dogs.
Ed has several articles and tapes about testing a puppy's temperment. This will give you a good start, but what happens after you get the puppy is almost as important. Read and buy these training sessions and wait for that puppy to arrive. Don't forget to puppy proof your home, in preperation for your new little alligator.
This is where you have to trust the breeder. He/she has been looking at these pups for 8 wks and should know which is best for you. The test are good, but a good, observant breeder will see more than the test will reveal. I have lots of Ed's tapes, and haven't gotten a bad one yet. He list the ones in order of what you need.
Kim : its hard to trust people these days ,but if you have done the researsh on the breeding and the breeder of your new pup. And the breeder knows his or her stuff on Sch dogs or sport in general,i am sure that you will get what you are looking for. There are many tapes out there and i know that Ed has some good tapes on puppy testing etc. Good luck Kim .Peter
Thanks for the replies. I ordered Ed's video 8 weeks to 8 months. I emailed the breeder Ed's puppy test and he said it would be very helpful. Puppy was born two days ago. He will be keeping a close eye on the 3 females in that litter and will be sending pup with the best prey drive and working temperment. If she's anything like my current dog I'll be happy. Thanks everyone.
