No matter how strong a bond is with your dog, when that dog gets a new master how well is the bond broken, on average. I know there’s exceptions to any rule and probably it’s stronger with some breeds than others. I could never see my dog bond with another person but I hear it’s a very natural thing that occurs quite commonly. Any thoughts?
My dog seems like a one person type dog but if it was given to someone else, would it assume the same role with another?
Well out of the 6 dogs that I've gotten over the last year or so (one since died, sold another, sent another back to her owner) had one that didn't particularly care for women, has better bond with his male handler, one that just couldn't get out of being afraid and one we're still working on. She's as bonded as I think she'll get. The one that died followed me everywhere, watched everything she was absolutely wonderful. Too good in fact, I keep looking for another female just like her which of course doesn't exist. I know have 3 that I work, 2 for strictly pets and I have a good bond, but with some it has been harder to get. There are some dogs you never get a bond with, yet someone else might.
Some dogs are one owner breeds, and after the it bonds with one person. It really takes a while if ever to bond with another person. The Old breed Doberman is know to be such a dog and there are other breeds like this. The chiuauah is also one owner I hear.
The GSD is know for his ability to pickup and bond with new owners, though to some degree the bond is stronger then with another. Almost like your first love, they will be many after that but none like it. The GSD seems to be a breed distince to survive, being able to adjust to different owners is important in surviving, 2nd - 3rd ownership.
