I just called my vet to sched a prelim. OFA for my 13 mo.old male, Nero. My vet had recommended this for him since he seemed to have experienced mild PAno a few months ago.
Talk about sticker shock, I was told the exam will cost 5 to 6+ HUNDRED dollars!!!!! ( 6 being if I want to include elbows)
I had Bella PENN HIP certified for half that cost!
I was going to do the OFA thinking it was easier and I just need a prelim to assess that he's ok before I start to try to advance with his training, but now I'm in a quandry!!!
I really think that is a huge amount of money(which I don't have!!) to charge for a few x rays and some anesthesia!!
A spay surgery cost less!!!
SO, I guess what I want to know is... am I just out of the loop and this IS a normal price???
I appreciate any feedback, thanks!

$500-600? Is this guy a Vet or a con artist?
We recently had our Kora's elbows certified, cost us just under $150. Our Vet charges $100 to knock the dog out, and take the X rays, making sure that they are done correctly (even if it takes a couple of times to get it right). We take the dog in in the morning, if the dog isn't tattoo'd, he does that after they are under ($25 for a tattoo), does the X-rays, then keeps the dog until late afternoon for observation, in case there is a reaction to the the dog being put under. Now, besides the $100 (and extra $25 for tattoo), the only other charges are for the OFA fees, which we pay them directly and not him.

I'm either really lucky or your vet is nuts. My orthopedic surgeon does all three views of the hips plus elbows and lumbo-sacral joint xrays for me for about $120. I don't send them to OFA or PennHip since I don't breed; I have him read them for me, which is good enough for me to know if the dog is sound to work.

Personally, the most I have ever heard is $250 for anesthesia, hips, and elbows. When Auster bloated it was $125 (I think) for the emergency fee, exam, and chest film.
I had Auster's hips done for $70, but I didn't have her put under. It would have worked fine had the vet not made me leave the room (Auster wanted to follow me, so she struggled during the xray, was fine before and after). Unless you train your dog to roll over and extend their legs on command and put up with the funny positions for elbow films I would suggest anesthesia to get an accurate picture (unless you have a very easy going dog).

For the distracted view, you must anesthetize the dog; it's invalid if the dog is awake.

However, OFA style films can be done without anesthesia. The original poster was asking about having her dog OFAed. Both OFA and the GDC accepted films of Auster that were taken without anesthesia (I did give her some acepromazine).
All of my future dogs will probably be trained the same way. I used a clicker to teach the xray command, first clicking when she was extended stretching and eventually making her stretch her legs out for a treat. I should have called it "belly" instead of "xray" though because now I use it to show people what a sorry job the vet did sewing up her bloat incision.

The fee your vet wants to charge you is in excess.
I live in Missouri and just had my GSD x-rayed, hips and his elbows. My vet only charged me $90.00 for the x-rays. Then you write a check for the OFA reading, and that was onlly $35.00.
I know that vets will charge what ever the traffic will bear, and it does depend on the area you live in. But IMO I'd shop around for another vet.
I sincerely hope that you find someone to do your x-rays for a fee that is reasonable.

WOW, thanks for all of the responses supporting me in my shock!!!
I was sure that that was an overpriced quote. As an xray tech by trade, I could not imagine how they justify that charge.I am actuALLY WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FROM THE OFFICE, SINCE i ASKED THEM TO explain to me why it was so high. They said they would ask the DR. and call me tomorrow.
The vet I go to is a very well known ortho dr.
(Whitefield) and perhaps he overcharges because of that?? But anyhow, I certainly can't afford to go there, so I'll have to find a more reasonable place.
Do I need to be concerned with the expertise of wherever I choose? My concern is accuracy in postioning, since that is a critical issue, isn't it?
Thanks again!
