I take private AKC obedience competition lessons from a very well known and successful woman who has won many many titles with her dogs (all Dobes). I have learned from this woman that the tone of voice is critical in training large powerful dogs like our Shepherds. I made many mistakes with my first 4 competition dogs.
I now am training a Leerburg female from Belgium/Checz lineage. She has responded so beautifully to commands, instruction, etc. given in a calm, gentle, soft tone of voice. I can't believe the progress I've made recently with this dog using the new voice. She is presently working in AKC Open and doing very well.
Those of you out there who loose patience when training (believe me I've been there) try a softer, gentlier tone with your dog.

Why do you suppose that is? So many times I have seen dogs together who do not treat each other with quiet tones, rather they tend to be harsh and the pup responds. I used to think that since other dogs treat each other that way, then humans ought to do the same. I realize now that this is not true, yet I do not understand why this is.
